Bathroom tile can bepainted, even in shower
Q. I have tile in my bathroom that I don't like. Is it possible to put a primer on it and then paint it? Part of it will be in the shower area.
A. With the proper products, you can prime and paint bathroom tile and expect it to hold up in a shower. Just be aware that painted tile looks painted. You won't get the same appearance as smooth ceramic glaze.
Dave Szep, president of Akron Paint Inc., gave these instructions for painting bathroom tile: Clean the tile thoroughly using trisodium phosphate to remove all the soap residue, or the paint won't stick properly. Rinse the tile thoroughly. TSP is a heavy-duty cleaner that's available at paint stores.
Next, apply a good-quality primer. Szep's recommendation is Grip & amp; Seal.
Follow with two coats of polyurethane oil-based enamel, which is a marine-grade coating and should hold up in a shower, Szep said.
Keeper of the keys
