DIVISION III GIRLS Record-setting Regina Royals roll past Patrick Henry, 70-45

The Royals won their fifth state title in six years.
COLUMBUS (AP) -- First-team All-Ohioan Carla Jacobs had 23 points and South Euclid Regina completed one of the most dominating two-game performances in tournament history by beating Patrick Henry 70-45 Saturday to roll to the Division III championship.
But coach Pat Diulus wasn't crowing about how they manhandled the opposition.
"Margins mean nothing at all to us," he said. "I'm not proud we set any kind of records. We just come out and play our game and hope we score more points than the other team."
The Royals (25-3), ranked No. 6 in the final regular-season Associated Press poll, won their fifth state title in the last six years.
Their only competition for such domination was themselves. The tournament record for widest margin over two games was 57 by Regina in 2003. The Royals won their semifinal and final by a combined 71 points this year.
"I'm very confident we're as good as any team in the state, regardless of division," Diulus said.
Balanced attack
Freshman Shay Selby, a second-team all-stater, added 20 points and junior Kalynne Proctor had 10 points. Kristina Walton, a senior headed to Niagara, grabbed 13 rebounds to go with nine points as the Royals dominated the boards, 49-28. Monique Godfrey, who has signed to play at Youngstown State, flirted with a triple-double and ended up with six points, eight rebounds and nine assists.
In the semifinals, they trailed 1-0 for 19 seconds before racing to a 72-26 victory -- the largest margin ever in the state tournament's 30 years.
They were behind by one point for a total of 14 seconds in the title game before reeling off 29 of the next 33 points.
Patrick Henry scored all 15 of its first-quarter points on 3-pointers and didn't hit its first shot inside the arc until almost 12 minutes had elapsed off the game clock.
Danielle Collins led the Patriots (25-2) with 11 points, with Amanda Coressel adding 10.
"We were one of the fastest teams in our area all year, but this (Regina) team showed us what fast really is," Patrick Henry coach Rick Schweibert said.
Quick lead
Regina built a 27-15 lead after a period while establishing a new tournament record for points in a quarter in a Division III final.
Down 12-11 after Coressel hit the Patriots' fourth 3, the Royals rattled off eight consecutive points to take command for good, with Jacobs and Proctor each scoring four points in the spurt.
"Transition is our game, there's no secret about it," Diulus said. "And not just on offense but in the passing lanes on defense as well. Pressure is an important part of our game and the kids like to play that."
The Royals shot 58 percent from the field in the opening half while maintaining a 44-26 advantage, and then pulled away to a 58-36 lead through three quarters.
"The game came down to the first half," Schweibert said. "We got behind and their fastbreak killed us and put us in a hole. It's tough to fight out of that hole against a team the caliber of Regina."
Regina is the only Ohio girls high school program to capture four consecutive state titles. They won Division III crowns from 2000 through 2003. The Royals lost in the regional championship game a year ago to eventual champion Ursuline, in part because Jacobs had sustained a season-ending knee injury.
The title was the eighth for Diulus, who won titles in 1990, '94 and '96 at Garfield Heights Trinity before moving to Regina.
