Bonds isn't setting timetable for return

He took the weekend off after a heavy workout on Thursday.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Barry Bonds backed off from rehabilitation on his surgically repaired right knee Saturday, skipping batting practice for the first time in six days and doing no work on the field.
The San Francisco slugger had scheduled a light weekend of work for himself so he could spend time with visiting family members.
Strenuous workout
The 40-year-old Bonds, recovering from Jan. 31 surgery, underwent his most strenuous workout this spring on Thursday with seven rounds of batting practice. He hit 10 home runs on some 80 swings, sprinted for short bursts on the warning track and did football-style agility drills between cones in right field.
He was prepared to feel soreness in his legs afterward and knew it might require a couple of days for his body to bounce back.
"It's a normal recovery day," trainer Stan Conte said.
The seven-time NL MVP said he has no timetable for when he'll appear in his first exhibition game, though he still plans to be ready for opening day April 5 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
He begins the season third on the career homers list with 703, trailing Babe Ruth (714) and Hank Aaron (755).
"I'm staying away from dates," Bonds said Thursday. "I don't even want to think about it. Nothing's won or lost in spring training. Nothing's won or lost in April, May or June. I want to come back ready for the team."
Some DH scheduled
He is not likely to face minor league pitching before playing in a Cactus League game, Conte said. But Major League Baseball will allow Bonds to start out as a designated hitter in home games at Scottsdale Stadium as long as the Giants do the same for the visiting team.
Bonds said it has been hard to be detached from his teammates this spring. He wants to "be in the group and do their normal preparation, even though I'm always late. To be out there on the field and joke around."
But sprinting along the warning track gave him a mental boost.
"It felt good because I felt like some of my gut went away," he said, chuckling. "I'm trying to get rid of this thing. Sitting around, I kind of got fat here."
