TRAFFIC Speed study set for SR 625
A resident complained to trustees of motorists' high speed.
BOARDMAN -- Ohio Department of Transportation plans a study this summer to determine whether the speed limit on the state portion of Lockwood and Arden boulevards should be reduced.
Lockwood, which is also state Route 625, becomes Arden after it rounds a bend. The speed limit on the portion of the road that runs through the township is 45 mph. The section within Youngstown corporation limits is 35 mph.
An Arden resident complained at a recent township trustee meeting that motorists speed around that bend, causing a safety hazard. Vehicles sometimes land in residents' yards and several years ago a car hit his house, the resident said.
But because it's a state route, the township doesn't control the traffic.
The township road superintendent contacted ODOT officials who informed him of the plans.
First step
Jennifer Richmond, an ODOT District 4 spokeswoman, said a speed study from Shields Road to the city's corporation line is set for summer.
That's a first step to determine whether a speed limit reduction is needed.
"After the speed study, there will be a recommendation," Richmond said, adding that speed and the amount of development along the road are the chief factors in a speed limit decision.
Curt B. Seditz, township administrator, said the police department also has added the road to its list of streets to regularly patrol for speeders. Richmond said the road also is set for repaving this year with anti-skid material.
