Volunteer Services Agency, a United Way Agency, is a local resource for volunteer recruitment, placement and management for people of all ages in the Mahoning Valley. It sponsors three programs: the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, which helps people 55 and older use their life experience skills in their communities; Volunteer Service to Seniors, which provides assistance and companionship to the elderly living independently in their homes; and the Volunteer Center, which helps people of all ages connect with local nonprofit agencies that need volunteer assistance. Short-term opportunities:
Park Vista Retirement Community: People needed to help with their Easter egg hunt on March 25. Also, they are looking for someone to walk the community's dog.
American Cancer Society: Volunteers needed to help with their "Spinning for the Cure" on March 12.
Easter Regional Kidney Foundation: Person needed to deliver carnations between 8 a.m. and noon on March 17.
Elder Care: Volunteers are wanted to assist with their monthly lunch outing.
Colonial Health Care Center: A volunteer is needed to visit once a month and do a craft with the residents.
Long-term opportunities:
Alzheimer's Association: The agency is looking for someone to do data entry on Excel.
Boy's and Girl's Club: Tutors needed for children in grades three through eight from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. weekdays.
CASA: Training people in March who are interested in becoming court-appointed special advocates for children.
Caprice Health Care Center: People needed to help the residents by reading to them, playing games or just visiting.
Children's Museum of the Valley: Volunteers needed to serve as receptionists, docents and for general maintenance.
Citizen Corps.: The group is looking for people who want to become involved in making their community a safer place to live. Training provided.
Help Hotline Crisis Center: Training begins this month for people who are interested in answering the phone lines to give referrals and intervention assistance.
Forum Health: Volunteers needed at the main information desks at Northside Medical Center, Tod Children's Hospital and Beeghly Medical Center.
Stitchers: People who like to knit, crochet or sew can help by making baby quilts, baby hats, children and adult caps, lap blankets or wheel chair bags. This can be done from the home and dropped off at VSA or arrangements will be made for pick-up.
Second Harvest Food Bank/Harvest for Hunger: Volunteers needed this month to pick up food collections at area schools and businesses.
Volunteer Services to Seniors: People needed to assist senior citizens with grocery shopping, visits to doctor's office, reassurance calls or friendly visits.
