NIH fellow to keynote Women in Science forum



An essay competition with a monetary prize will be held.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Lenka Fedorkova, a graduate of Youngstown State University who is a science and technology fellow at the National Institutes of Health, will be keynote speaker at the eighth annual Women in Science and Engineering Career Workshop.
The workshop will be March 12 in Kilcawley Center at YSU.
The event, which will run from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., will feature panel discussions by area career women in the morning and hands-on activities and lab demonstrations on topics ranging from biology to physical therapy in the afternoon.
Who can attend
The workshop, open to girls from Mahoning and Trumbull counties and western Pennsylvania, is designed to expose young women in grades 6 through 12 to career opportunities in science and technology. Students will attend two workshops and two demonstrations of their choice. Parents can receive college planning and financial aid information and take campus tours while their daughters participate in the workshop.
An essay competition is also being held. The winner, to be announced at the workshop, will receive a $75 award donated by the Northeastern Ohio Chapter of the Association for Women in Science.
Registration forms must be submitted by March 11 and essay entries must be submitted by March 4. The workshop is free to all students.

In addition to her position at the National Institutes of Health, Fedorkova is the program director for Next Wave, a weekly online publication that covers scientific training, career development and the science job market. Next Wave is published by Science magazine and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Fedorkova earned undergraduate and master's degrees in biological sciences from YSU. She received a doctoral degree in biology from Kent State University. She will discuss her career and types of science careers available today.
