Students explore factors that contribute to one's personal identity, such as interests, capabilities and perceptions. (Social Studies: Individual development)
Activities:
1. Draw a picture of yourself playing with some of your friends. Write a sentence telling how you are all alike. Write another sentence telling how you are different.
2. Ask family members and friends if they know any words in another language. Make a list of the words they tell you. Ask them how they learned the words.
3. According to information in today's MiniPage, what is the second-largest population group in the United States? What is the smallest group? What percentage are Asian American?
4. Look in the entertainment section of your newspaper to find musical or art events that reflect a culture different from your own. What three events would you like to attend? What do you think you will learn from attending these events?
5. See how many different ethnic or cultural groups are represented in your classroom. Find a classmate who has lived in a different part of the country. Discuss how that place is different from where you live now. Find a classmate whose family or ancestors came from a different part of the world. Discuss any family traditions or celebrations that might be different from yours. Find someone who can teach you a new word in another language. Discuss with class members the importance of learning about other cultures and languages.
