Roses are fetching, but they're also fleeting.
Sid Fey's roses, on the other hand, last for years.
Fey's Chicago-area company, Sid Fey Designs, preserves real roses in gold, silver, platinum and enamel and sells them on its Web site, www.loveisarose.com. They're available singly and in bunches, as well as in the form of earrings, pendants and pins.
Choices range from a miniature rose preserved in enamel with gold accents for $19.95 to the Trump-type option of 100 24-karat gold roses for $3,495. The company also sells a smaller selection of preserved orchids.
Snow Commander has additional power
Toro has added oomph to the single-stage snow thrower with its new Snow Commander.
The Snow Commander is lightweight and maneuverable, but it has a 141-cubic-centimeter engine -- equivalent to about 14 horsepower, a company spokesman said -- and a large funnel that can move a large quantity of snow. The machine clears a path 24 inches wide and throws the snow up to 35 feet.
Two models are available, retailing for $859 to $959. To find a Toro dealer, call (866) 336-5205 or visit www.toro.com.
Trail Blazer Snow Augerlike using a lawn mower
We know snow in Ohio, no? Yes indeed. That's why Union Tools of Columbus came up with the Trail Blazer Snow Auger, a kind of horizontal corkscrew designed to clear four inches of heavy, wet stuff and up to six inches of dry, powdery flakes with less effort than a conventional shovel.
Invented by a chap from frigid Wisconsin, the auger can clear a driveway up to 20 feet wide without throwing additional snow on the newly cleared pavement, said senior product manager Charlie Wilson. "As you push the tool along, it churns the snow along the side. This is as easy as pushing a lawn mower. There is no bending or lifting."
Even better: "It works so fast you are not out there very long."
It costs about $35 only at Home Depot.
