AREA COLLEGE ROUNDUP Sterling leads Westminster past Dickinson in tourney
DeSales toppled Grove City in the ECAC tournament.
DICKINSON, Pa. -- Sophomore Desiree Sterling scored a game-high 19 points and senior Alyson Gasper broke a tie with four free throws in the final 19 seconds, leading Westminster College to a 54-50 win over Dickinson in the opening round of the NCAA Division III women's basketball tournament.
The Titans (21-7) advanced to a second round game at Messiah College (24-3) in Grantham, Pa., Saturday at 7 p.m.
The Red Devils (24-4) led for most of the game, including 27-23 at halftime.
Westminster started the second half with a 6-0 run to take its first lead with just over 16 minutes remaining, but over the next 13 minutes Dickinson built a 50-41 lead.
From that point, the Titans went on a 9-0 run to tie the score on a jump shot by freshman Emilee Ackerman.
Gasper rebounded a missed shot and was fouled with 19 seconds to go. She made both free throws to make it 52-50, and following a Dickinson turnover was fouled again and made those free throws with six seconds to go.
Ackerman was the only other Titan to reach double figures, scoring 10 points. Eaton had nine rebounds, while Erica Tallo had five steals. Gasper finished with four steals and four assists.
Dickinson was led by Allyson Teatom with 10 points.
DeSales 71, Grove City 63
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Grove City's season came to an end in the quarterfinals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southern Championship Tournament.
Jocelyn Kempema, Rachel McCoy and Shannon Overdorff all scored 10 points for Grove City (16-10). McCoy and Brittany Anderson each grabbed eight rebounds for the Wolverines (16-10).
It is Grove City's eighth winning season in nine seasons.
Holly Liebl led DeSales (21-7) with a career-high 26 points, 19 of which came in the second half. She added 11 rebounds, while Alyssa Antolick added 15 points and six rebounds.
