TRUMBULL-GEAUGA SOLID WASTE DISTRICT Break-in leads to six arrests, hurt officer
The officer fell 20 feet while struggling with a suspect, landing on concrete.
WARREN -- A city police officer is injured, and six people face charges after a break-in early Tuesday at an Enterprise Drive N.W. construction site and subsequent chase.
A facility for the Trumbull-Geauga Solid Waste District is under construction there. The $1.65 million household hazardous waste facility at 3159 Enterprise Drive is scheduled to open this spring off U.S. Route 422 (Parkman Road N.W.).
This is the second time in a month the site has been vandalized.
Tuesday morning's hunt for the suspects wound up at 4282 Eagle Creek Road around 2:10 a.m., where the five men and one woman were apprehended.
Officer Manny Nites struggled with one man there and then fell 20 feet from a crawl space above the garage, landing on a concrete floor.
Nites was hospitalized at Trumbull Memorial Hospital, where his condition was not disclosed, but Capt. Tim Roberts, chief of detectives, said Nites was stable.
Bob Villers, waste district director, said one door was kicked, and another had glass broken. Work crews just that night finished installing locks and securing the place, he said.
Police patrol
Police said Lt. Tim Hughes was patrolling on Enterprise at 12:43 a.m. when he saw two men walk around the corner of the building, then run toward the highway -- jumping two fences.
A police dog was brought to the scene after Warren Township police advised that the suspects were seen in a trailer park on Route 422. The dog and several officers tracked them for about two hours to 4282 Eagle Creek.
Officers spoke to several people inside a garage there, who permitted them to check inside. Located was a mid-sized 1991 Chevrolet the suspects were believed to be using.
In the Trumbull County jail on Tuesday were:
U Brett L. Hemberger, 23, of 180 North River Road, Warren, for breaking and entering, resisting arrest and assault on a peace officer. He was located in the crawl space, "where he actively resisted arrest, refusing to give the officer his hands, and striking the officer several times during the struggle," the police report states. After Nites and Hemberger fell through the ceiling, Hemberger continued to resist arrest; Nites was taken to the hospital by officer Ed Hetmanski. Hemberger was treated at the hospital.
U Jason A. Mills, 21, of 5707 Hall Road, Andover, breaking and entering, resisting arrest and falsification. He was located in an upstairs loft apartment and gave police false information as they tried to identify him, the report says.
U Arthur E. Tilton Jr., 40, 4882 Eagle Creek Road, Leavittsburg, obstructing justice.
U John N. Adams, 20, of 590 Fairfield N.E., Warren, obstructing justice.
U Meghan A. Collins, 18, of 38 Evans St., Niles, obstructing justice.
U Mark Mills, 23, of 4471 Cherry St., Newton Falls, obstructing justice.
