City man pleads guilty to 2 charges

The defendant could receive probation or up to 18 months in prison.

WARREN -- A 61-year-old city man whom police say was running a fencing and bookmaking operation has pleaded guilty to a felony count of receiving stolen property and misdemeanor gambling.
John Kucek, 61, of Youngstown Road S.E., entered the pleas Tuesday in the courtroom of Judge Andrew Logan of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
Kucek, who could receive probation or up to 18 months in prison, will be sentenced after a background check by the Trumbull County Adult Probation Department, said Chuck Morrow, an assistant Trumbull County prosecutor.
The sentencing is expected to take place in about a month, Morrow said.
Police searched Kucek's residence in December and February.
Neither Kucek nor his attorney, Phil Vigorito, could be reached to comment.
A sizable find
In December, police recovered 17 lawn mowers, one new riding mower, four portable heaters, five snowblowers, four chain saws, tool chests, a welder, power drills and saws.
When a search warrant was issued in February, police recovered a clientele list, tickets, computers, cash and books used in an illegal gambling operation, police said.
Detective Michael Currington has said the bookmaking operation was a "substantial one" for Warren.
"The police did a terrific job on this case," Morrow said. "I really want to thank Detectives Mike Currington and Jeff Hoolihan. They worked very hard."
Morrow said he would also like to thank victims, who are waiting to have their stolen merchandise returned, for their patience.
"The victims have waited for this to resolve and have been very patient," Morrow said.
