Bids for resurfacing program to undergo review in Canfield

Council members are accepting letters of interest for a soon-to-be open seat.

CANFIELD -- Six Canfield streets are to be paved as part of this year's city resurfacing program.
The city opened bids Tuesday for the work. The three submitted came in below the engineer's estimate of $215,000.
Butch & amp; McCree Paving of Hillsville, Pa., was the apparent low bidder with its $124,323 base proposal.
The company submitted an alternate bid of $42,686 for paving the lot surrounding and behind the city building on Lisbon Street.
"There's money in the budget for this," said City Manager Charles Tieche.
The streets to be paved are Canterbury Court, Neff Drive from Montridge Drive to Montgomery Drive, Montgomery Drive, Glenview Road, Russo Avenue and Lakhani Lane.
Tieche said the city engineer will review the bids, and city council must authorize Tieche to enter a contract with a company.
New vacancy
Council also is looking for a new member.
Kevin Hughes, a councilman since 1998, is leaving that post at the end of August because he is moving out of state.
Tieche said letters of interest are being accepted through July. To be eligible, candidates must be registered voters, living in the city for at least a year.
Letters may be sent to city hall, 104 Lisbon St.
Under the city charter, remaining council members select replacements to fill unexpired council terms.
Hughes' term runs through 2007.
