Board considers options for new school

NORTH JACKSON -- Jackson-Milton Board of Education members are exploring the possibility of hiring a company to oversee part of the construction process for a new school.
At a special meeting last week, board members discussed recent interviews that had been conducted with three companies, any of which could be retained as construction managers for a new $12.5 million high school/middle school to be built near Jackson-Milton Elementary School, 14110 Mahoning Ave.
The three given consideration for the project were Carbone Construction Inc., Hammond Construction Managers and Ruhlin Construction Managers. All are Northeast Ohio companies.
Treasurer John Zinger noted that the board has not decided if it plans to use a construction manager as part of the process, and that school officials want to "look at all ... options."
"We want to try to build this as cost-effectively as possible and use our resources wisely," Zinger said.
He added that building plans are contingent on passage of a 28-year, 5.5-mill levy on the Aug. 2 ballot. The funds from the levy would be for construction-related expenses, the treasurer said.
A 5.4-mill levy that was on the ballot in May failed by 84 votes.
