MEN'S GARDEN CLUB Former Disney horticulturist speaker at celebration



YOUNGSTOWN -- Katy Moss Warner, president of the American Horticultural Society of America and chief executive officer of George Washington River Farm in Alexandria, Va., will be the featured speaker for the 75th anniversary celebration of the Men's Garden Club of Youngstown on June 30 at the Davis Education Center in Mill Creek Park.
The daylong event will include a silent auction, door prizes, morning and afternoon seminars, garden tours, lunch, dinner and evening entertainment.
Registration will be held from 8 to 9:30 a.m., followed by seminars on plant diagnostics and organic gardens until 10:45 a.m., lunch and Ms. Moss Warner's address until 1:15 p.m., seminars on container gardens and gourd crafts from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m., and seminars on insects and perennials from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m.
A garden tour will precede the hospitality hour starting at 5 p.m., the banquet will follow at 6, and entertainment by The Youngstown Connection will begin at 7:30.
The speaker
Ms. Moss Warner has been with the American Horticultural Society since April 2, 2002. Before that, she was director of horticulture and environmental initiatives at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, responsible for the landscapes of four theme parks, 15 resort properties and more than 70 miles of roads on the 30,500-acre vacation mecca.
She worked there more than 24 years, leading a team of more than 700 horticulturists, agronomists, environmentalist, designers, gardeners, arborists, irrigation specialists and pest management technicians, and focused much of her career on earth-friendly practices.
She later entered Harvard Graduate School of Design's Loeb Fellowship program for mid-career professionals who have made significant contributions to the natural environment in America, and has received a host of career honors. She is co-author of "The Gardens of Walt Disney World Resort" and wrote the preface to "The American Horticultural Society Encyclopedia of Gardening.
