Fragrant new rose breed named after Liv Tyler
Could there be anything more important than an image, a label, a name -- especially when it comes to beauty? So, this is an especially auspicious day for one humble flower: A new breed of roses has been named after Liv Tyler. It is, of course, all in the service of product. Created by French cosmetic maker Givenchy -- which employs Liv as its face -- the Liv Tyler Rose is one of the ingredients of the very resistibly named Very Irresistible Givenchy Sensual Eau de Parfum. Tyler, who gives off an almost Audrey Heburnian charm, was overwhelmed: "It's this big, beautiful pink rose. Maybe I can ... plant it in my garden."
'On Golden Pond' closes while Jones recuperates
NEW YORK -- The Broadway revival of "On Golden Pond" will closes today because its star, James Earl Jones, who is recuperating from pneumonia, can't return to the production next week. "The entire 'On Golden Pond' family is heartbroken to close this production prematurely, and it's especially disappointing that James Earl Jones won't be with us for our final performances," said producer Jeffrey Finn in a statement Thursday. The statement said Jones' doctors had determined that "the seriousness of recuperating from pneumonia would prevent his return until sometime in August," adding that the actor is expected to make a full recovery during that time. Jones has been recuperating at home, the statement said. The 74-year-old Jones has been out of the show since June 15, and box-office receipts have plummeted. Last week, the play, which also stars Leslie Uggams, grossed $162,053, filling less than 40 percent of the seats at the Cort Theatre. During Jones' absence, his role has been played by Charles Turner. "On Golden Pond" opened April 7 to largely positive reviews, particularly for Jones, who portrays irascible professor Norman Thayer. The production had been slated to run through Labor Day. When it closes today, it will have played a total of 19 previews and 93 regular performances.
Roger Ebert awarded star
LOS ANGELES -- Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Roger Ebert isn't a movie star, but he critiques them on TV -- so memorably that Thursday he received his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A crowd of family, friends and fans cheered as Ebert's star was unveiled in front of Hollywood's El Capitan Theatre. Attendees included director Werner Hertzog, actress Virginia Madsen and actor Tony Danza. "When I watch movies, I can feel what it's like to walk in another person's shoes," Ebert, 65, told the crowd. "Movies make us more decent people. This is a wonderful day for me." Ebert, who began his journalism career as a 15-year-old sports writer for the Champaign-Urbana (Ill.) News-Gazette, was named the Chicago Sun-Times film critic six months after joining the paper in 1966. In 1975, he became the first film critic to receive a Pulitzer for arts criticism. That same year Ebert teamed with the late Chicago Tribune film critic Gene Siskel on the TV show "Sneak Previews," which would evolve into the long-running "Siskel & amp; Ebert and the Movies." Their "thumbs up, thumbs down" system of rating films became so popular that Ebert eventually trademarked his right thumb. Ebert now co-hosts "Ebert & amp; Roeper" with fellow Sun-Times columnist Richard Roeper. A humorously unapologetic critic who once called a film "an assault on the eyes, the ears, the brain," Ebert has written 17 books, including "Roger Ebert's Book of Film" and "I Hated, Hated, HATED This Movie." He has also dabbled as a screenwriter, with credits including "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" and "Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens."
Elle Macpherson, partner agree to spend time apart
LONDON -- Australian supermodel Elle Macpherson and partner Arpad Busson announced Friday that they are separating. The couple, who have two sons, said that "whilst remaining the greatest of friends, we have decided to spend some time apart to consider our future." They said no third party was involved. "We have had, and in many ways continue to have, a wonderful relationship, which has produced two beautiful children," said the statement, which appealed for privacy. Macpherson, 42, and Swiss financier Busson are the parents of Flynn, 7, and 2-year-old Aurelius Cy. Macpherson, one of the world's top earning supermodels in the 1990s, now has her own line of lingerie, Elle Macpherson Intimates. Nicknamed "The Body" during her modeling career, 6-foot-tall Macpherson has also had a series of movie and television parts. She starred opposite Hugh Grant in the 1994 film "Sirens" and had a recurring role in the TV sitcom "Friends."
