Tips for upkeep
Cohen Furniture has been in business in northern Illinois since 1879. Its Web site, www.gocohens.com, provides the following tips for treatment of spills and stains on leather furniture:
Blot excess liquid immediately with a clean absorbent cloth or sponge. If necessary, use clear, lukewarm water and gently wipe the spill. Dry with a clean towel and allow to air dry.
For stubborn stains, use a mild solution of Ivory or Castille soap and clear, lukewarm water. Apply the soap to a clean, wet sponge, then rinse well and let air dry. Always try the cleaning method in a hidden area first to be sure the leather is colorfast.
For butter, oil, or grease stains, wipe off excess with a clean, dry, cloth and then leave it alone. The spot should dissipate into the leather in a short time. Do not use water to try to wash out butter, oil or grease stains.
Most liquids at first will be repelled by leather, but if left to stand they will be absorbed. This is why it's a good idea to wipe up spills immediately. However, if a spill is absorbed into leather, it will dissipate over time, just as human skin will absorb and eventually diffuse stains.
