Extra weekend patrols target drunk drivers
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Operating a Vehicle Impaired Task Force will be conducting saturation patrols for violations throughout Mahoning County this weekend.
County police agencies will have additional officers on patrol Friday and Saturday.
Extra officers on patrol will be targeting drunk drivers and those not wearing seat belts. There will be no DUI checkpoints set up this weekend, however.
The task force reminds all who plan on using alcohol to act responsibly by designating a sober driver.
Local departments that will have extra officers on patrol are Youngstown, Austintown, New Middletown, Goshen, Jackson, Poland and Canfield.
Pay phones vandalized
YOUNGSTOWN -- Four pay phones in the city belonging to Hart Communications of Cochranton, Pa., were vandalized and at least $25 in quarters stolen from each phone, reports show. The owner told police that key pads on the phones were cut and the circuit boards torn out to get to the coins. The damage, reported Wednesday, was estimated at $2,000 to each phone. The phones were at 1812 Oak St. (two), 1108 McGuffey Road and 1704 Logan Ave., police said.
Cash, keys, garden hose stolen from 80-year-old
YOUNGSTOWN -- After an 80-year-old Ferndale Avenue woman finished her yard work late Wednesday afternoon she discovered that her house had been entered through a rear window. She saw footprints in the dirt and on the siding under the window and found a deadbolt lock on the garage door damaged. Cash from the woman's purse was missing, as well as car keys, garden hose and tools, police said.
Car cruise raises money for hospitalized woman
WARREN -- Sunrise Inn on East Market Streeet will host a car cruise from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday. All proceeds will benefit longtime waitress Theresa Scott, who was involved in a serious motorcycle accident June 7 and is hospitalized at St. Elizabeth Health Center. There will be food, and the DJ will be Big Rick Huge 50/50. There will be dash plaques for the first 75 cars, door prizes and awards for manager's choice, best of show and top five.
House ransacked during family's moving process
YOUNGSTOWN -- A family in the process of moving into the city from a Boardman apartment discovered Wednesday that their house on Van Dyke Street had been broken into. Stolen from the house were tools, cleaning supplies, food, beer, assorted lawn equipment and more. The husband found the overhead garage door open and pry marks on the front door. All the rooms had been ransacked and some items from drawers strewn about, police said.
McNasty's bar robbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A break-in at McNasty's Bar and Grill on Poland Avenue was discovered Wednesday afternoon, police said. The front door had been pried open and an undetermined amount of cash taken from the register. An inventory would determine any further loss.
More than $5,000 stolen from Fuel Mart
AUSTINTOWN -- Robbers held the clerk of a Seventy-Six Drive gas station at gunpoint and took more than $5,000 and two phones from the store.
The clerk at Fuel Mart told police that two men came into the store shortly after 3 a.m. Thursday. One ordered her to the floor as he held a handgun to her head. The other removed the cash from the registers and from a store safe.
The men then left the store and the clerk discovered a store phone and her cellular phone had also been taken.
The woman told police she only got a look at the man with the gun, who was wearing a mask.
