Woman shot in Lowellville
LOWELLVILLE -- A woman was shot in the head at a residence on West Liberty Street Extension late Tuesday afternoon, police said.
According to Police Chief William Vance, police received a call about the shooting about 5:30 p.m. The woman was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Police were releasing no further information about the shooting late Wednesday, pending an investigation.
Rezoning approved
CANFIELD -- Township trustees approved the rezoning of about 16 acres off Tippecanoe Road to allow a planned unit development.
Randy D. Walter, president of RDW Co., the developer, has said that the plan for 53 villa homes is part of Tippecanoe Woods.
The development will include seven single-family villas and 23 paired villas.
The trustees' vote Monday follows recommendations for approval for the change from Mahoning County Planning Commission and the township zoning commission. The property had been zoned for single-family residences.
Trustee Judy Bayus voted against the zone change, with Trustee Chairman William Reese and Trustee Paul Moracco supporting it.
Road work impact
AUSTINTOWN -- A portion of state Route 46 at the Interstate 80 ramps is reduced to one lane and the left turn lane until mid-July.
The $7.2 million project is to re-surface and widen Route 46 to five lanes, relocate the I-80 westbound on-/off-ramps and reduce the curvature of the I-80 westbound off-ramp.
Also included is the reconstruction of the bridge on Route 46 over I-80. The project is scheduled for completion in late summer.
Large heroin seizure
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Neshannock Township police are calling the seizure of heroin during a search at the home of Frank C. Moore one of the largest in recent history.
Moore, 22, of Shenango Road, New Castle, was arraigned by a magistrate and is being held in the Lawrence County jail on $100,000 bond, police said.
Moore's arrest came after a three-month investigation. The raid at his home turned up more than 300 packs of suspected heroin, more than $1,000 and two guns -- a 9 mm handgun and .22-caliber assault-type rifle, police said.
New Castle police dog Chuck assisted in the search.
Gunshot hits house
YOUNGSTOWN -- Gunfire woke a man in the 700 block of Detroit Avenue around 1 a.m. Tuesday, and he discovered one of the shots hit his house.
Police found a slug in the living room floor.
A witness reported seeing a man come out of a house in the 500 block of Detroit and fire five to 10 shots and then drive off toward South Avenue.
Five casings were found in the roadway.
St. John bonfire
YOUNGSTOWN -- St. Patrick's Parish, 1420 Oak Hill Ave., will have its third annual St. John the Baptist Bonfire at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
The bonfire will begin with a prayer service on Cleveland Street across from the church. This will include the burning of worn sacramental or broken rosaries and worn prayer cards, Bibles and statues, which is the proper way to burn worn sacramental items.
Refreshments, music and activities will follow.
Activities include a cookout with American and Puerto Rican food, face-painting for kids and Latino music.
The feast of St. John is celebrated in many Hispanic countries and Ireland.
Annual Turtle Derby
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Lions Club will host its 44th annual Turtle Derby from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at Ronald McDonald House, 2450 Goleta Ave. The free event features clowns, prizes and many other activities that benefit Forum Health Tod Children's Hospital.
Kicker winner
HOWLAND -- The winning $100,000 Kicker ticket in the Ohio Lottery game was sold to Mark F. Hughes of Trumbull County at McQuaids Gas & amp; Oil, 131 S. State St., Girard.
He will receive a $71,500 check after federal and state withholding taxes.
McQuaids Gas & amp; Oil will receive a $1,000 agent bonus for selling the winning ticket.
