Supervisors approve plan to buy 5 bulletproof vests

No general fund money is needed to buy the $500 vests.
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Two $1,000 donations have made it possible for Union Township to buy state-of-the-art bulletproof vests for police officers.
At their meeting Tuesday, Union Township Supervisors approved purchase of vests for their five officers from Red Diamond Uniform and Police Supply Inc., Youngstown, at a cost of $500 each. Supervisor Steve Galizia explained that two of the part-time officers also work for other townships and according to their union contract agreement, their other employer must pay half the cost. Donations of $1,000 each from Wal-Mart and Sam's Club make up the difference, he said, so that no general fund money has to be used.
Other transactions
Supervisors also agreed to purchase carpeting for the three recently remodeled offices at the township building. They selected the lower of two quotes solicited, choosing Castle Floors, Union Township, which offered to do the job for $950. The offices included the supervisors' office, the secretary/treasurer's office, the conference room and a closet.
They also accepted a quote of $935 from K & amp;K Tree Service, Edinburg, to top off 13 or 14 trees near the municipal building and in Scotland Meadows Park. Supervisors also opened bids for two projects at a special meeting before Tuesday's regular meeting.
There were three bidders each for paving a portion of Wilson Road and paving the Scotland Meadows Park entrance. Galizia said Butch & amp; McCree, Hillsville was "apparent low bidder" on both projects. The bids will be awarded at a special meeting to be announced at which time bids for the West Washington Street Storm Sewer project will also be awarded.
