Man arraigned in West Side bar shooting

The alleged accomplice already is under indictment in two separate cases.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Shawn L. Woodall, who was released from federal prison five months ago, now is accused of shooting a man in the stomach at a West Side bar.
Woodall, 26, of West Chalmers Avenue, was arraigned Tuesday in Youngstown Municipal Court on a felonious assault charge. Judge Robert P. Milich set bond at $250,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 29.
The judge said that if Woodall is able to post bond, he must be placed on electronically monitored house arrest.
Bassil Ally, an assistant city prosecutor, told the judge that Woodall's record includes receiving stolen property and drug, firearms and domestic violence charges. Ally said Woodall, who has a federal drug conviction, will likely have a hold placed him on at the jail by his federal probation officer.
Records show Woodall was convicted in a crack cocaine conspiracy case in the late 1990s and sentenced to 92 months in prison. He was released in January and placed on four years' supervised release.
The shooting
Woodall is accused in the June 12 close-range shooting of 25-year-old Robert Gonzales at Cyrak's West, a Steel Street bar. Gonzales, of East Florida Avenue, was hit in the stomach around 2 a.m. and listed in critical condition for several days.
Detective Sgt. Ron Rodway said Gonzales has since been released from the hospital.
Joseph Gonzalez, 25, of Ninth Street, Campbell, who is suspected of being Woodall's accomplice, was arraigned Tuesday on an obstruction of justice charge. Rodway said Gonzalez, no relation to the victim, took the gun from Woodall after the shooting and left with it.
Ally told the judge that Gonzalez is under indictment in an aggravated vehicular homicide case and under indictment in a separate gun case. The prosecutor said Gonzalez is a threat to the community.
Boardman lawyer Paul Scarsella told Judge Milich that he represents Gonzalez in the two felony charges pending and will represent him in the new case. Scarsella asked for a reasonable bond.
Judge Milich set Gonzalez's bond at $100,000. A preliminary hearing was set for June 29.
As with Woodall, should Gonzalez make bond he must be placed on electronically monitored house arrest.
