YSU hosts materials camp for teachers

YOUNGSTOWN -- Area high school math teachers are learning about materials engineering during a "summer camp" through Friday at Youngstown State University's Rayen College of Engineering and Technology.
The camp is sponsored by the American Society for Materials and hosted by YSU, with most events in the university's Moser Hall.
"We're trying to revitalize the materials engineering program at YSU and there's no better way to do that than to invite high school teachers to campus to learn about materials, tour our facilities and take that knowledge back to their students," said Robert McCoy, YSU professor of mechanical and industrial engineering.
Teachers are learning about experiments involving metals, plastics, ceramics, composites and other materials, McCoy said.
Participants are touring YSU's engineering laboratories and seeing demonstrations of the latest high-tech equipment, including a three-dimensional printer, digitized materials testing machines and a scanning electron microscope.
Teachers are also touring the Clarence R. Smith Mineral Museum in Moser Hall, the Materials Research Lab in Struthers, and the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor.
