FUND-RAISER Boardman principal averaging 3 mph on walk for Matthew

The principal is raising money on behalf of one of the pupils at his school.
BOARDMAN -- The elementary school principal who is walking to raise money for research on an incurable disease logged about 30 miles in the first two days of his journey.
Michael Notar, Stadium Drive Elementary principal, started walking from Columbus on Saturday and plans to return to the township July 3.
By Sunday afternoon, he had reached Utica, Ohio, walking about 15 miles each day.
"I'm averaging about 3 miles an hour," Notar said by cell phone during his walk.
Notar, who will become superintendent of the Brookfield school district next year, is trying to raise money for The Matthew Fund.
Matthew O'Nesti, an 8-year-old pupil at Stadium Drive, was diagnosed at 18 months with spinal muscular atrophy, a genetic disease for which there is no cure.
The disease affects muscles used in everyday activities like walking and swallowing.
The boy's family established a research fund at Ohio State University and the money the principal raises will go to the fund.
The principal sent notes home to parents and to other schools asking for donations.
Matthew is also a close friend of Notar's son.
Notar was accompanied on Sunday's leg of his walk by Mary Assion, a kindergarten teacher at Stadium Drive. Assion's husband drove a car equipped with supplies along the route.
Notar planned to resume walking about 7 a.m. today.
