YOUNGSTOWN -- Willis Bode of Canfield was honored Sunday morning at the Salvation Army's West Side Chapel on Mahoning Avenue for her 50 years of service to the community.
A native of Youngstown, Bode has served as a Salvation Army volunteer and has assisted other organizations such as the Hotline Crisis Center and the League of Mercy.
She is also chaplain for the Juvenile Justice Center, having led Christian services there for many years.
Recognition at Sunday's ceremony was presented by Theresa Warren of the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center, Rachell Joy of Lost then Found Ministries, and Maj. Diana Capanna of the Salvation Army.
Bode has previously been honored as Woman of the Year for the Western Reserve Chorus in 1981, and she received the YWCA's Woman of the Year award in 1991.
South Side cleanup
YOUNGSTOWN -- A neighborhood cleanup is planned Friday and Saturday for several South Side streets.
The cleanup will start at 9 a.m. both days. Participants are asked to meet at the Mill Creek Community Center, 496 Glenwood Ave.

Shots fired at houseon South Side
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police found four bullet holes in the front of an East Florida Avenue home early Sunday after responding to a call about gunfire in a South Side neighborhood.
According to a report, officers were called to the 700 block of East Florida around 4 a.m. after a resident said she heard "at least" four to five shots in front of her residence. The woman didn't see or hear anyone, the report states.
After police checked outside, they saw the bullet holes in the front of the residence.
No one was injured, and police found no casings outside, according to the report.
A neighbor told police shots were fired from a large dark vehicle that fled westbound toward South Avenue, but he couldn't provide other information about the car.
Man shot in robberyearly Sunday
YOUNGSTOWN -- A South Side man was injured early Sunday after being shot during an apparent robbery.
Darren Bush, 40, of Cleveland Avenue, was treated and released from St. Elizabeth Health Center after being shot in the upper right arm around 2 a.m. Sunday.
According to reports, Bush told police a black male robbed him near Cleveland Avenue and Hillman Street.
