Eastbourne: EASTBOURNE, England -- Kim Clijsters defeated Russian qualifier Vera Douchevina 7-5, 6-0 for her third title of the year. The seventh-seeded Belgian added to her back-to-back wins at Indian Wells and Miami with the victory in this grass-court warmup for Wimbledon. It was Clijsters' 24th career title. Douchevina, the 2002 Wimbledon junior champion, beat top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo on the way to her first WTA Tour final. Douchevina, 18, in her eighth match of the week, wilted and lost the second set in just 17 minutes.
Ordina Open: DEN BOSCH, Netherlands -- Klara Koukalova defeated fellow Czech Lucie Safarova 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 to win her first WTA championship. It was Koukalova's sixth final. On the men's side, Michael Llodra beat Mark Philippoussis 7-6 (2), 6-7 (5), 6-3 to set up a final with third-seeded Mario Ancic, who beat Jan Hernych 6-4, 6-4. After a slow start in the first set, Koukalova broke Safarova's serve three times in the second set. "I am unbelievably happy. It was a very tough match. This is a magic place for me," said the 23-year-old Koukalova, who said she has developed a lucky habit before crucial matches: eating a cheeseburger. "I won every match after McDonald's." Safarova was trying for her second title of the year after winning at Estoril last month. It was the first grass-court tournament for the 18-year-old. Llodra, defending his only ATP title, capitalized on his only break point after Philippoussis opened the fourth game of the final set with two double faults. Hoping to resurrect his flagging career, Philippoussis was playing in his first semifinal on the ATP Tour since September 2003. Earlier this year, he tore a groin muscle and then an ankle ligament, and played only nine matches before entering the Den Bosch tournament as a wild card.
Nottingham: NOTTINGHAM, England -- Richard Gasquet won his first ATP Tour title with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Max Mirnyi in the 10tele.com Open. The Frenchman took control from the outset, breaking in his first service game. Mirnyi called for an injury break between sets to treat his hand, but it didn't affect Gasquet's concentration. Gasquet, celebrating his 19th birthday, was given a cake during the presentation ceremony. Mirnyi led the crowd in a rendition of "Happy Birthday." "If you had told me at the start of this year that I would win my first tournament on grass, I would not have expected it," Gasquet said. "It is great for me to prove I can play on the surface and now I believe I can go a long way at Wimbledon next week." Gasquet is seeded 27th at Wimbledon and plays Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber in the first round. He could meet Rafael Nadal -- the Spanish teenager who won the French Open earlier this month -- in the third round. His projected path could set up a semifinal match with Andy Roddick, and a final with two-time defending champion Roger Federer. Mirnyi was gracious in defeat. "Richard has played a good match and he deserved to win," Mirnyi said. "My injury was just another of those obstacles which are put in your way sometimes and which you have got to try to overcome."
