INTERLEAGUE Guerrero's homers lead Angels; Jeter's first slam guides Yankees

The Phillies lost for just the third time in 11 games.

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Vladimir Guerrero hit his second home run of the game in the 10th inning, giving the Los Angeles Angels a 2-1 victory over the Florida Marlins on Saturday.
The reigning AL MVP tied the score with a shot in the eighth off Jim Mecir, spoiling Dontrelle Willis' bid to become the first 12-game winner in the major leagues.
Willis was pulled by Marlins manager Jack McKeon with a 1-0 lead after scattering 10 hits through seven scoreless innings and stranding five runners in scoring position.
But Guerrero greeted Mecir with a homer to start the eighth. Two innings later, he greeted Todd Jones (1-2) with a leadoff drive into the left-field bullpen on a 3-2 pitch.
It was Guerrero's 10th homer this season and the 21st of his career against the Marlins. The five-time All-Star has eight game-ending homers in his career, the other seven with the Montreal Expos.
Francisco Rodriguez (2-1) pitched two perfect innings for the win.
The Angels had an opportunity to win in the ninth against lefty Valerio De Los Santos, but Darin Erstad grounded to shortstop with the infield in and Alex Gonzalez started an inning-ending 6-2-3 double play. It was the first double-play grounder in 269 at-bats this season for Erstad, who along with Kevin Mench and Jim Edmonds were the only players who had not grounded into one.
In a matchup of former World Series rookie pitchers, Angels right-hander John Lackey matched zeros with Willis through five innings before the Marlins broke through.
Luis Castillo reached on a bunt single to lead off. He went to second on a wild pitch, was held at third on Miguel Cabrera's single to right and scored on a single by Carlos Delgado that extended his hitting streak to 13 games.

Yankees 8, Cubs 1
NEW YORK -- Derek Jeter hit his first career grand slam, then added another homer to help New York beat Chicago.
Jeter's slam, a sixth-inning drive to left-center off reliever Joe Borowski, backed a stellar start by rookie Chien-Ming Wang (4-2) as the Yankees extended their winning streak to five.
It was Jeter's first home run in 136 at-bats and 155 plate appearances with the bases loaded. The Yankees captain had the most at-bats with the bases loaded without a slam among current major leaguers, and his 156 homers coming in were the most without a slam by active major leaguers.
With the seventh multihomer game of his career, Jeter tied his career high of five RBIs.
Glendon Rusch (5-3) fell to 0-7 against the Yankees.
The Cubs have lost three straight overall and dropped to 0-6 at Yankee Stadium. They were swept by New York in the World Series in 1932 and 1938 and did not return to the Bronx until Friday night.

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Kirk Saarloos recovered from Jimmy Rollins' leadoff homer to pitch Oakland past Philadelphia.
Scott Hatteberg and Dan Johnson each drove in a run for the A's, who held off Philadelphia with excellent defense from center fielder Mark Kotsay. Ricardo Rincon worked two scoreless innings, his longest outing in seven years, and Justin Duchscherer earned his first career save.
The Phillies lost for just the third time in 11 games.
Saarloos (3-4) threw a season-high 61/3 innings, scattering nine hits and four walks to win his second consecutive decision. The right-hander allowed baserunners in every inning but was helped by four double plays and some shaky Philadelphia baserunning.
Former A's pitcher Cory Lidle (6-5) took the loss despite 72/3 solid innings.

TORONTO -- Ben Sheets outpitched Roy Halladay in a matchup of two-time All-Stars, leading Milwaukee over Toronto.
Carlos Lee and Geoff Jenkins homered for the Brewers, who have won just two of nine. They held a players-only meeting after Friday night's loss.
Jenkins ended a career-worst 0-for-29 slump with a homer off Miguel Batista in the ninth.
Sheets (3-6) allowed two runs -- one earned -- and seven hits in eight innings. Tommy Phelps threw one pitch and earned his first major league save, retiring pinch-hitter Alex Rios on a grounder with the bases loaded.
The Brewers scored three runs in the first off Halladay (10-4), the 2003 AL Cy Young Award winner. He won seven of his previous eight starts.

Cardinals 5, Devil Rays 2
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Albert Pujols homered in support of Matt Morris, helping the St. Louis right-hander remain unbeaten with a victory over the Devil Rays.
Morris (8-0) allowed two runs and five hits in eight innings and retired 15 of the last 16 batters he faced. The Devil Rays had one hit -- Carl Crawford's eighth-inning triple -- after the third.
The victory hiked the Cardinals' lead in the NL Central to a season-high 81/2 games over the Chicago Cubs. It also moved Tony La Russa into a tie with Bucky Harris for fourth-place on managerial career wins list with 2,157.
Pujols snapped a 2-2 tie with a two-run homer off Mark Hendrickson (2-4) in the fifth. Scott Seabol had an RBI single in the fourth, and So Taguchi tied it with an RBI single before scoring on Pujols' drive into the right-field seats.
