GIRARD -- The acquisition of new business, combined with the peak season, is prompting Indalex Aluminum Solutions to add 55 temporary jobs and to recall 20 laid-off workers at the plant here.
"The business tends to be somewhat cyclical every year," said spokesman Scott Langdon. "It has its high seasons and its low seasons."
Building and construction trades, which tend to be seasonal businesses, are a large market segment for aluminum extrusion companies, Langdon explained.
The surge in business was somewhat expected because now through fall is peak season, Langdon said, but was "unexpected in the sense that there's been new business on top of peak season."
New home sales and new home construction rates have been on the rise in recent years in the United States, contributing to the success of Indalex.
"While there's not a direct correlation between the two, there is a correlation," Langdon said.
The Girard plant typically handles work for the building and construction market, Langdon said. Aluminum windows, doors and storefronts are the most common uses for the aluminum extrusion process in those fields.
The 55 new positions are in the plant's extrusion, paint and packing departments. Pay rates range from $7.65 to $8 per hour. The jobs extend until the end of October.
"Depending on business levels, it is conceivable they could be longer than that, perhaps even permanent," Langdon said.
Currently, there are 400 employees at the Girard plant.
A hiring fair is being held Monday at the Indalex extrusion plant.
