MINOR LEAGUE FOOTBALL Ohio Red Bulls in opener Saturday



The new team will play its home games at John Knapick Field in Campbell.
CAMPBELL -- The Ohio Red Bulls, a minor league football team that will play its home games at John Knapick Field, opens its inaugural season Saturday.
The Red Bulls, who will play the Penn Ohio Raiders at 4 p.m., are owned by Will Smith Jr., who is also serving as the team's coach.
Tickets are $8 for reserved seats and $5 for general admission. Youth league players who wear their game jersey will be admitted for $1.
Proceeds from opener
Proceeds from Saturday's game will go towards financing for Charleka Thompson of Boardman, who has been selected to participate in the Miss Ohio USA pageant.
The Red Bulls will play a 10-game schedule, all on Saturdays. They have four more home games, scheduled for July 9 against the Columbus Cowboys, July 23 against the Beaver County Warriors, Aug. 6 against the Pittsburgh Hurricanes and Aug. 20 against the Penn Ohio Raiders.
The Red Bulls will also play the Penn Ohio Raiders July 30 at Sharon High Stadium.
Working with Smith as his coaching staff are John Polish, assistant head coach and defensive coordinator; Chuck Arn, offensive coordinator; Sam Papa, running backs and wide receivers; Gary Benjamin, defensive backs; Gerald Dendy, special teams, and Bob Blott, linebackers.
Eight team league
The Red Bulls are members of The United States Football Alliance League, which consists of eight teams. The Red Bulls are in the AFC with the Penn Ohio Raiders, Pittsburgh Hurricanes and Beaver County Warriors.
The NFC consists of the Columbus Cowboys, Columbus Blackhawks, Northern Ky-Oh Flames and Ohio Dogs.
"Our mission is to serve our community and bring it together for a season that hopefully will continue throughout the years to come," wrote Smith.
"We will strive to provide a positive experience in the game of football that fans of all ages will be able to enjoy."
Smith wrote that the team's goals are "respect, discipline and eagerness.
"We want the community to have a minor league football team that they can be proud of," added Smith.
47-player roster
There are 47 players listed on the roster, many of whom played high school football in the Valley. The team scrimmaged Pittsburgh Power on June 4 and won 13-0.
