Man charged with theft
BOARDMAN -- An Akron man was charged with two counts of theft after trying to leave two U.S. 224 restaurants without paying his bill Wednesday evening. Police arrested Michael A. Addoms, 39, at the Olive Garden when he tried to leave after refusing to pay his $47.44 bar bill. He also left Longhorn Steakhouse without paying a $14.35 bill, police said.
Neighborhood cleanup
YOUNGSTOWN -- A neighborhood cleanup is planned next week for several South Side streets. The cleanup will start at 9 a.m. June 24 and 9 a.m. June 25. People interested in participating are asked to meet at the Mill Creek Community Center, 496 Glenwood Ave. Among the streets involved are Bernard and Granite streets, Ridge, West Woodland, Oak Hill, Fairview and Lakewood avenues. Youngstown Litter Control & amp; Recycling is providing gloves, bags and hauling, and Steel Valley Construction Co. is supplying equipment. Refreshments and organizational help will be provided by Community Housing Options Involving Cooperative Efforts and Jubilee and Southside Community Development Corp. Two men arraigned in attempted break-in
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two men who are suspected of trying to break into Angelo's Pizza on South Avenue this week were arraigned Thursday in municipal court on charges of attempted breaking and entering. Bond was set at $50,000 for both Michael A. Welsh, 31, of East Judson Avenue and Roger DeWitt Jr., 30, of West Chalmers Avenue, the clerk of court's office said. A charge of complicity was not filed against Ronald Peters, 38, of Martin Mobile Home Park on South Avenue, the clerk's office said. All three were arrested around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. Police said surveillance video shows that Welsh used a pickax at least 12 times on the window at the pizza shop but succeeded only in making a hole in the safety glass.
Shotgun blast damages house's porch, window
YOUNGSTOWN -- A shotgun was used to fire at a house in the 3000 block of Idlewood Avenue while the occupant was sitting in the living room, talking on the phone around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said. The shotgun blast damaged the porch and window. The victim told police that a man had been at the house a few minutes before the gunfire looking for her children's father, who was not there.
Councilman to resign
CANFIELD -- Kevin Hughes, a city councilman since 1998, is stepping down at the end of August. Hughes, who is moving out of state, submitted his resignation this week. Under the city's charter, it will be up to the remaining council members to appoint Hughes' replacement.
Award for Web site
YOUNGSTOWN -- First Night Youngstown's Web site received a second-place award at the 19th annual First Night International conference in Delray Beach, Fla. The Web site -- www.firstnightyoungstown.org -- was designed and is maintained by Directed Technologies Inc. of Youngstown.
Hermitage gets grant
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- A $22,267 state grant was given to the city to help operate its recycling program. The amount of the grant was based on the total tons and types of materials recycled in the city in 2003. According to a press release, the county recycled 2,220 tons in 2003. The grant is in addition to the other funds the state department allocates in the effort to recycle 35 percent of all municipal waste. This amount is the department's statewide goal.
Fifth Avenue closing
YOUNGSTOWN -- Fifth Avenue between Grant and Wood streets will be closed for the Soap Box Derby from 5 p.m. June 24 through June 26. Traffic will be permitted to cross Fifth Avenue at Lincoln in the evening. However, all other portions of Fifth Avenue will remain closed. The race will begin 8 a.m. June 25. If it is rained out, it will continue at 9 a.m. June 26. The road closure will end around 8 p.m. June 26. All motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes.
