Contractor to repave street at no cost to city

Another project aims to make a West Main Street intersection less confusing.

CANFIELD -- West Main Street will be repaved with asphalt at no cost to the city.
After Foust Construction of Girard, the general contractor, finished the project earlier this year, portions of West Main Street started to show signs of raveling or disintegration.
The old pavement started to show through in some spots, particularly in the center of the road.
A subcontractor did the paving portion of the roughly $950,000 resurfacing project, which was funded in part by a state Issue 2 grant.
"The samples taken by the city engineer and the contractor show that not enough asphalt was used in the asphalt/concrete mix," City Manager Charles Tieche said. "There wasn't enough asphalt to bind the stones together."
The material will be removed and a new mix applied at no cost to the city, Tieche said.
When the new pavement is complete, the contractor will plant grass along the roadside.
"For residents' perspective, it's going to be finished, but a time line hasn't been identified so I would just ask for their patience," the city manager said.
The project included curb installation as well as pavement and other work from the village green to the western city limits. The raveling occurred between Wadsworth Street and Cardinal Drive.
Intersection simplification
Foust also was picked after submitting the lowest of two bids for another West Main Street project.
The $70,470 contract calls for the company to make the intersection of West Main, Cardinal Drive and Railroad Street less confusing to motorists.
The intersection is two lanes for motorists traveling eastbound on West Main and three lanes for those heading westbound.
Although the lanes are striped, one side of the intersection is concrete and the remainder asphalt, which can be deceiving to drivers, Tieche has said.
To drive straight, a motorist heading east on West Main must jog to the right.
The project would widen the intersection to get a right-turn lane and to line up the lanes to go straight ahead heading east.
