Police DUI checkpoint
A sobriety checkpoint will be staged Friday in Mahoning County by members of the OVI (operation of vehicle impaired) Task Force. Grant money administered by the District Board of Health funds checkpoints and extra patrols. Police from Boardman, Canfield, Goshen, Beaver, New Middletown, Springfield, Poland, Austintown, Mahoning County Sheriff's Department and Youngstown State University will participate. The checkpoint location was not released.
Shoe drive for orphans
AUSTINTOWN -- Austintown Podiatry Associates is sponsoring a shoe drive through Aug. 5 to benefit orphan children around the world.
Shoes, socks and shoelaces will be accepted. New items are preferred, but "gently worn" items will be taken.
Austintown Podiatry Associates will also accept money that can be sent to orphans so they can buy the footwear of their choice.
Anyone interested in donating items can visit the offices of the Austintown Podiatry Associates at the Austintown office, 1300 S. Canfield-Niles Road; the Boardman office, 7000 South Ave. Suite 6; or the Warren office, 1797 Elm Road N.E. Brochures.

Poetry festival
EAST PALESTINE -- East Palestine will hold its 11th annual poetry festival at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 23 in the East Palestine Memorial Public Library.
People can submit up to three poems of any style or theme. The submission deadline is Aug. 12.
Applicants must let the festival know if they are under age 14, between 14 and 21, or over age 21.
Poets can mail their poems to the East Palestine Memorial Public Library, 309 N. Market St., East Palestine, OH 44413.
They can fax their poems to (330) 426-4950 or e-mail them to the library at eplibmail@yahoo.com. Admission is free.
Unknown shooter
YOUNGSTOWN -- Gregory D. Richardson, 20, of Compton Lane, told police he heard roughly 40 gunshots and then realized he'd been hit around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 100 block of East Philadelphia Avenue. A check at St. Elizabeth Health Center on Wednesday showed that he was still in the emergency room. Police said Richardson suffered a gunshot wound to the scrotum and another bullet grazed the inner thigh of his right leg. Police collected five casings. The victim said he didn't see who fired.
Summer parade
CAMPBELL -- The city will host its "Summer in the City" parade at 12:30 p.m. July 9.
The lineup will start at 10:30 a.m. The parade will start at the Campbell City Hall on Tenny Avenue and travel north on 12th Street to Park Drive. It will then travel through Neoka Drive and Edwards Lane before finishing at Roosevelt Park.

Recycling collection
CANFIELD -- The Mahoning County Commissioners' Reuse and Recycling Division, "The Green Team," will host a household electronics collection from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. June 25 at the Canfield Fairgrounds.
Mahoning County residents may bring old computers, cell phones, printers, VCRs, DVD players and televisions to be refurbished or recycled. This service is offered at no cost to Mahoning County residents. No large office copiers will be accepted.

Arts fest seeks helpers
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Summer Festival of the Arts, scheduled for July 9 and 10 at Youngstown State University, is seeking volunteers.
Volunteers are needed to work in artist registration, information booths, the children's hands-on art tent, technical assistance at performance sites and at the Festival of Nations international area.
Various shifts are available, and each volunteer will receive a festival T-shirt along with reserved free parking.
