Miller gets rehab start for opener

The former first round pick is one of the Indians' top prospects.
NILES -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers' opening day roster has yet to be finalized, but the team knows who its starting pitcher will be on June 21.
Adam Miller, ranked the best prospect in the Cleveland Indians organization last year by Baseball America, will be at Eastwood Field on a rehabiliation assignment for the Scrappers game against the Jamestown Jammers.
Miller, a 6-foot-4 right-hander, was the 31st overall selection in the 2003 June free agent draft. He was the sandwich pick for the Indians. Last season at Lake County (Class A), he was 7-4 with a 3.36 ERA in 91 innings. He struck out 106 and walked just 28 and was ranked the best pitching prospect in the South Atlantic League.
Miller was promoted to Kinston (Carolina League), where he had a 2.08 ERA. He struck out 46 and walked 12. Miller is 10-10 in his minor league career, with a 3.34 ERA in 167 innings.
New picks
The Indians signed six of their picks from last week's amateur draft and four have been assigned to Mahoning Valley.
The Scrappers are infielder Andrew Lytle, right-handed pitchers James Deters and Matthew Loberg, and left-hander Thomas Cowley.
The Indians also signed right-hander Jason Schutt and infielder Nick Petrucci.
Lytle (6-foot, 180 pounds), a right-handed hitting shortstop, played at the University of Iowa.
Deters (6-4, 180) is from Calvin (Mich.) College. He went 7-1 with a 2.79 ERA in nine starts this spring. He pitched five complete games and limited opponents to a .218 batting average.
Loberg (6-3, 235) is from the University of Minnesota, and Cowley (6-3, 190) is from Oklahoma State.
Jason Schutt (6-3, 225) is from Central Missouri State and Petrucci (6-1, 190) is from College of the Canyons (Calif.).
