4 young men arraigned
YOUNGSTOWN -- Four drug-trafficking defendants were arraigned Monday in juvenile court, according to the clerk of courts office. Their next hearing dates were not immediately available. Three of the Poland boys, all 17, were arrested Friday at Poland Seminary High School when the bell rang to change classes. They are: Erik Carlson, Joseph Liguori and Richard Rovnak Jr., according to court papers. The name of the fourth defendant, who is now 18, was not made available. He was arrested Saturday.
Man accused of assault
BOARDMAN -- Police arrested a Ridgewood Drive man over the weekend after his girlfriend accused him of cutting her throat with a knife.
Mark M. Amendolara, 44, was arrested at his home Friday evening and charged with felonious assault. His girlfriend, a 25-year-old woman with whom Amendolara lives, told police he cut her throat during an argument. Reports show that the woman had cuts on the left side of her throat and upper arm but do not indicate that she was transported to a hospital.
Man arrested near bar
AUSTINTOWN -- Police arrested a Youngstown man Friday evening outside of a Meridian Road bar, charging him with various drug offenses.
Clifford T. Hudson, 32, of Republic Street, was charged with trafficking in cocaine and drug abuse cocaine, both felonies, and with misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and drug abuse marijuana.
Police said they saw a woman come out of Billy's Bar, South Meridian Road, and get into Hudson's vehicle, which was parked in the lot. The woman reportedly gave Hudson money, and he gave her something in return. Police found more than $2,000 in Hudson's pants pocket and suspected cocaine and marijuana in the vehicle.
Chestnut construction
LEETONIA -- The Chestnut Street railroad crossing will be closed starting at 8 a.m. Wednesday for construction of a waterline extension. Chestnut Street will be closed from the railroad tracks to Front Street all day.
Baby's death examined
WARREN -- The coroner's office is investigating the death of 4-month-old Halie E. Rogers. The infant's mother said she lay the baby on the couch for a nap and the baby was not breathing when she checked her around 2:15 p.m. Sunday. The baby was declared not breathing upon arrival by officials; Action Ambulance medics worked on the baby for several minutes. The baby was declared dead at Trumbull Memorial Hospital.
Practicing politics
Twelve young men from area high schools were selected by DeWitt-McConnell Post 235 of the American Legion to participate in the 69th annual Buckeye Boys State, which began June 11 at Bowling Green State University. The students joined more than 1,400 other delegates to spend nine days studying the organization of Ohio government by operating a mock state government. Delegates chosen by Post 235 were Richard Courtney and David Johnson of Girard High School; Phillip Besoiu, Jacob Dulberger, Kyle Hoff, Eric Stone and Mark Wooten of Liberty High School; David Evinsky, George Akiraly, Raymond Michaels and Kristopher Rose of McDonald High School and Brien Piersol of Mineral Ridge High School. The delegates' trip was funded by Post 235 and donations from various co-sponsors.
Deer causes destruction
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- A deer caused about $2,000 in damage when it gained access to Shenango on the Green Retirement Home on Sunday.
The deer went through the library window of the property from the outside patio and was then observed running through hallways.
The deer found an open door of an apartment and caused extensive damage there.
The deer broke through the apartment window and leapt about 20 feet from the second level balcony to the parking lot below.
