YOUNGSTOWN -- Schools Superintendent Dr. Wendy Webb has been named by the Ohio State Board of Education as one of about 50 early childhood leaders to be a member of a School Readiness Solutions Group.
The group's main focus is planning ways the state can provide improved learning opportunities for children up to age 6.
The readiness group is also set up to assist the leaders in creating an early learning system designed to reach more families in Ohio.
Firewood giveaway
BOARDMAN -- Mill Creek MetroParks' wood storage lot on West Golf Drive, just south of Stitt Pavilion, will be open June 25 for those wishing to collect firewood.
There is no fee for the firewood, but individuals must cut and load it themselves. The lot will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Only 15 vehicles will be allowed in the storage lot at any time. Trucks larger than pickup size are not allowed.
Trailers attached to trucks are not allowed. Automobiles with trailers under 8 feet are allowed.

Ice cream festival
MERCER, Pa. -- The annual Guernsey Ice Cream Festival will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. June 24 at the Mercer County 4-H Park, state Route 19.
More than 2,000 people annually attend this all-you-can-eat ice cream social, organizers said.
The event is sponsored by the Mercer-Northwest Guernsey Breeders' Association. Ice cream with strawberry or chocolate topping, cake and beverage are included in the admission.
Tickets are available at the festival and also are on sale in advance at the Mercer County Cooperative Extension Office, state Route 19, north of Mercer.
Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children 6-12, and free for children under 6.
Poetry festival
EAST PALESTINE -- East Palestine will hold its 11th annual poetry festival at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 23 in the East Palestine Memorial Public Library.
People can submit up to three poems of any style or theme. The submission deadline is Aug. 12.
Applicants must let the festival know if they are under age 14, between 14 and 21, or over age 21.
Poets can mail their poems to the East Palestine Memorial Public Library, 309 N. Market St., East Palestine, OH 44413.
