Cops shoot pit bull
BOARDMAN -- Police shot a pit bull when it charged at an officer Wednesday evening, according to reports.
A Chester Drive woman called police, saying that two pit bulls were loose in the neighborhood and that she and another man had been attacked.
The dogs had no tags and no owner controlling them. An officer shot and killed one of the animals when it came at him. The other was taken by the county dog warden.
Two hurt in accident
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Two people were injured Wednesday afternoon in a two-car accident at State Road 18 and Mitchell Road in Neshannock Township.
Michelle Logan, 26, and Krista Howie, 2, of New Wilmington, Pa., were taken to Jameson Memorial Hospital after the accident at 1:15 p.m. They were treated and released, a nursing supervisor said.
Witnesses told township police that Logan, traveling south on State Road 18, failed to stop at a red light at Mitchell Road. Her car struck a dump truck traveling west on Mitchell Road. The truck driver, Clifford W. Markel, 44, of Beaverdale, Pa., was not injured. Charges are pending in the accident, police said.
Three principals seek to retire and be rehired
AUSTINTOWN -- Three school district principals have notified the district of their intent to retire this year and seek rehiring next year in their same positions.
Daniel Bokesch, Austintown Middle School principal; James Carchedi, principal of Watson Elementary School; and Anthony Russo, principal of Woodside Elementary School, plan to retire. A public hearing is set for 6:30 p.m. July 18 in the board of education office, 225 Idaho Road. The public may comment on the rehiring at the beginning of the meeting.
Bike safety rodeo
McDONALD -- A bike safety rodeo will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Ramsey Pavilion. The rodeo, which will include a bicycle inspection and obstacle course, is open to all children. They must bring their own bikes and helmets. The rodeo is presented by Jason Reckard, State Farm agent, in cooperation with the McDonald Police Department.
Mosquito spraying set
NILES -- The city has scheduled spraying for mosquito control for Tuesday after 6 p.m. If it rains Tuesday, the alternative spraying date will be Wednesday. Anyone with respiratory problems should remain indoors with the windows closed. Food should not be prepared or left outside during the spraying period and all pets should be taken indoors.
Veterans van to visit
SHARON, Pa. -- The Disabled American Veterans mobile service van will visit the city from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
A national service officer will be available at the van, which will be at Preston Ford, 1251 E. State St. Veterans and their families can have questions answered about benefits and other issues and can receive free counseling and assistance in filing claims. Hartford breakfast
HARTFORD -- The Hartford Fire Association will have its monthly breakfast from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. The breakfast will be at the Hartford Fire Department, State Routes 305 and 7, and will include pancakes or french toast, eggs, sausage, milk, orange juice, coffee and tea. The cost is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors; children under 5 eat for free. Takeout orders are also available.
Emergency planning
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Local Emergency Planning Committee will meet at noon Tuesday at the offices of the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste District, 5138 Enterprise Blvd. N.W.
In a related matter, the Trumbull County Emergency Management Agency's executive board will meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the EMA office, 1453 Youngstown-Kingsville Road (at the regional airport) in Vienna. The board will open bids it has received for high-band receiver-pagers.
Park seeks volunteers
PORTERSVILLE, Pa. -- McConnell's Mill State Park is looking for volunteers to assist at the Old Grist Mill. Volunteers are needed until Labor Day to meet and greet visitors and to lead tours through the mill. The need is greatest on weekends and holidays at the park, just west of Interstate 79 off U.S. Route 422.
