CANFIELD -- A 19-year-old student at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center was charged with assault after he was accused of throwing a steel-toed boot at a fellow student Tuesday morning at the school. The student, Chad Spencer of Lake Park Road, Alliance, told police that he had no issues with the other student, a 16-year-old from Salem. The boot hit the other student in the head, causing him to hit his head on a locker and then fall to the floor, reports said.
Growth hormone case
YOUNGSTOWN -- A federal grand jury in Cleveland returned a one-count indictment Wednesday against Albert Milano Jr., 40, of East Calla Road, New Middletown. He is charged with possessing with intent to distribute more than 3,500 units of human growth hormone in violation of federal food and drug laws. The case is being prosecuted by Arturo G. Hernandez and was investigated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and U.S. Postal Service.
Burglary suspect waits
GIRARD -- The Trumbull County grand jury will soon decide if a 23-year-old Girard man should be indicted on three counts of burglary and one count of drug abuse. Judge Michael Bernard decided Wednesday to send Hargas Hall's case to the grand jury. It is not known when the grand jury will hear the case. Hall, who is being held in the county jail on a $1 million bond, has pleaded innocent to the charges. Judge Bernard denied a request by Hall's attorney, Irene Makridis, to have the bond reduced. He said he believes if Hall were free he would commit further crimes. Hall is accused of breaking into homes in Girard.
Pupil suspended
YOUNGSTOWN -- A seventh-grader at Hillman Elementary School was suspended Tuesday after a teacher saw the boy key a police officer's personal truck, according to police reports. The 14-year-old Idlewood Avenue boy scraped down to the bare metal on the driver's side of the truck, police said. The length of the scratch was estimated at 10 feet. The teacher told police she was standing by her classroom window that overlooks the staff parking lot when she saw the boy place items into a car. The boy, as he crossed the parking lot, then looked at another male student and laughed as he dragged something along the length of the truck, the teacher said. The teacher called out to the boy, who ran into the building. The teacher reported what happened after the boy refused to accompany her to the office.
Mayoral breakfast
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber will host a Youngstown mayoral forum at 7:30 a.m. June 24 at the Byzantine Center at the Grove on Shady Run Road. The six candidates running for mayor in the November general election are scheduled to attend. Also, Jason Whitehead, Youngstown Central Area Community Improvement Corp.'s executive director, will speak at the meeting about the city's downtown redevelopment. Tickets for the breakfast are $12 for members and $15 for others.
Safety Day in the park
BAZETTA -- Bazetta Police Department will host a safety day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 18 at Mosquito Lake State Park. The event will feature local police and fire agencies and a medevac helicopter landing at 1 p.m. There will also be a variety of fire and rescue trucks on display from Mosquito Lake State Park, Ohio Division of Watercraft, Ohio Division of Wildlife, Army Corps of Engineers and the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Free fingerprinting for kids and free gun locks will be provided as a part of Project Child Safe. Heather Merritt from Birds in Flight Sanctuary will also have several birds at the event.
Public meeting canceled
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County commissioners have canceled their public meeting on Tuesday because the courthouse will be closed that day in observance of Flag Day. Commissioners have also canceled today's caucus. Their next caucus will be June 16, and the next regular public meeting will be June 21. Those sessions will begin at 10 a.m. The commissioners also announced their next night session will be at 6:30 p.m. June 28 at the New Beaver borough building. There will be no morning session that day.
