FOOTBALL Mooney, Canfield camps will boast many big names

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops is among those helping his alma mater.

Two former Browns, two current Browns, a former Heisman Trophy winning quarterback and some of the best college football coaches in the country will be in town later this month for two of the area's best football camps.
Former Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar and Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops highlight the fourth Cardinal Mooney "Camp of Champions" on June 27-28.
The camp, which also has former Browns running back Greg Pruitt and Kansas coach Mark Mangino (a New Castle, Pa., native), is open to players entering grades four-nine. And after starting with about 200 kids, the camp has grown to 250 over the past few years.
"Really, our facility can't accommodate much more," said Mooney High assistant coach Ron Stoops, who helped lead the Cardinals to a Division IV title last fall. "I don't know what we'd do if we ever got rain."
Volunteers
Other volunteer clinicians include Mooney graduates Mark Stoops (the defensive coordinator at Arizona under his brother, Mike) and Mark "Bo" Pelini (LSU defensive coordinator), along with college coaches Pete Rekstis (Kent State defensive coordinator), Jerry Olsavsky (YSU linebackers coach), D.J. Durkin (Bowling Green defensive line coach) and Jerry Schmitt (Duquesne coach) and former NFL defensive back Michael Zordich.
"It started a few years back when Bob and Mike offered to do something to help out the youth in our community," said Ron Stoops, whose family goes on vacation together each summer before the camp. "We've had a lot of celebrities and successful people come and help out. It's been a lot of fun."
San Francisco 49ers owners John and Denise DeBartolo York are corporate sponsors of the camp, helping cover the cost of camp brochures as well as helping provide funds for kids who couldn't otherwise attend.
The camp costs $45 and runs from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. both days. Camp brochures are available in Boardman at Sports World, Creekside Beverage and Fields of Dreams, at Katie's Corner in Canfield and at S & amp;T Engraving in Poland. For details, call the high school at (330) 788-5007.
Canfield camp
Former University of Miami quarterback Gino Toretta, a Heisman Trophy winner, will join current Browns wideouts Andre King and Andre Davis for Canfield High School's quarterback and wide receiver camp on June 23-24.
The camp costs $75 and is open to boys entering grades seven-12.
"You can never get enough good teaching and evaluation," Canfield coach Mike Pavlansky said. "We wanted to have a skill camp, which is something that's not really offered around here.
"The 'Camp of Champions' is as good as it gets, but we wanted to do something to get high school kids involved. So we focused on two positions that take a lot of time and skill to learn."
Toretta, whose wife is from Boardman and who has helped with Mooney's camp, met Pavlansky a few years back when Pavlansky invited him to speak to the Cardinal football team before its playoff game in 2001.
Toretta used his University of Miami connections to get King involved. King then got Davis involved. Kosar, also a Miami grad, was a guest at last year's Canfield camp.
"If players are looking to go on and play college football, it'll be a good experience to hear from these guys about the realities of college football," Pavlansky said. "These guys know all about the academic and athletic side and can talk about some of the positives and negatives."
