Women urged to join art show

Food and refreshments will also be available throughout the day.
WARREN -- A black wrought iron fence, stretching along Mahoning Avenue from the Women's Park to city hall, will be adorned with art created by women from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday.
The Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County in partnership with the Trumbull Art Gallery and the YWCA of Warren is sponsoring the event called "Create for the Gate" art show. All women over the age of 16 are encouraged to participate in the event inside the city's historic district.
The idea came from Sheila Conner, YWCA board member and volunteer for both FACT and TAG.
While attending high school in Iowa, Conner participated in a school art show that was hung along a fence in front of the city hall. She shared her memories with Bobbie Brown from FACT and Marianna Nissen of TAG.
Soon the project was off and running.
Guidelines for submission
There is no entry fee and works will be accepted from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, just before the show. Any media will be accepted as long as it does not exceed 11 inches x 17 inches and can be mounted on foam core.
Entries will be handled with care, but FACT, TAG or the YWCA will not be held responsible for loss or damage from any cause whatsoever. This is an outdoor exhibit, and submitting works to the show implies an agreement on the part of the artists with these conditions.
All work may be picked up at the Women's Park on Saturday, from 7 to 8 p.m. with photo identification. Any work not claimed will become the property of the Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County.
In addition to the art show, other events scheduled for Saturday afternoon are:
U1 to 2 p.m., pilates and toning demonstration by YWCA instructor Shari Harrell.
U4 to 7 p.m., make and take summer mosaics for children with TAG art instructor Nancy Foster.
U4 to 7 p.m., self-guided family fun activities.
U6:30 p.m., historic walking tour with Alex Bobersky
U7:30 p.m., guitarist Eleni Kelakos at Warren Community Amphitheatre.
About the artist
As the daughter of a career foreign service officer, Kelakos spent the first 15 years of her life living and traveling throughout Europe and the Middle East. One constant as she moved from country to country was the stage.
Later, she graduated with a double major in both theater and semiotics from Brown University. She worked as an actress for many years in New York City and Los Angeles.
Her credits include film ("Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey") and television ("Beverly Hills 90210").
Her recorded work has received airplay and commendation, but it's on the live stage that she fires on all cylinders. Her way with a funny tale borders on stand-up comedy. Sponsors said she will leave the audience filled with hope and with a heightened awareness of the details that make us human.
Food and refreshments will also be available throughout the day. Activities will take place near the Women's Park as well as along the Riverwalk and Warren Community Amphitheatre.
