SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Unfortunately for Grove City High, there is no second chance in the PIAA baseball playoffs.
Facing defending Class AAA runner-up Peters Township, the Eagles were one-and-done as they fell 5-2 to the Indians.
"We played very well, but we made a couple of mistakes and against a good team, a couple of little mistakes will cost you," said Grove City coach Pat Forese. "We knew going in that the team that played the best was going to win because everybody is good from this point on."
The Indians strung together a walk and five straight hits for four runs in the third inning to break a 0-0 tie.
"Andy [starting pitcher Geibel] got into a little bit of trouble there and he just left a couple of pitches up," said Forese. "We got to the point where we had two outs, and he just hung a curveball to the next kid and he hit it well."
Not enough
The Eagles cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the third, but that was as close as they would get. Beau Fisher was safe on a fielder's choice and Bill Herman followed with a single to left. Jesse Alfreno scored Fisher with a double to left, then Herman scored on a sacrifice fly by Dan Keil. The Eagles only had five hits in the game and Alfreno had three of them, including two doubles.
"He [Alfreno] is definitely a quality player," said Forese. "The good thing about him is that we have him back for another year."
The Eagles loaded the bases in the fifth inning with two outs, but Indian pitcher Jason Conley fanned pinch-hitter Ross Trinch.
"We needed a big hit, but it just didn't happen," Forese said. "When you face a good kid like that who is throwing hard, you have to take advantage of the opportunities you have and we weren't able to do that."
