VIENNA -- Fourteen-year-old Joshua Day will become a second lieutenant and a "Pilot for a Day" in the Air Force Reserve
He will receive the honorary title today from the 910th Airlift Wing, based at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station.
The military started "Pilot for a Day" to reach out to children with a chronic or life-threatening disease or illness by granting base tours and providing them with a chance to forget their problems for a day.
Day is receiving treatment for diabetes at Tod Children's Hospital.
He will take a tour of the base, receive a flight suit, fire the Fire Arms Training Simulator and taxi in a C-130 Hercules.
Masked man runs away carrying 4 bags of cash
YOUNGSTOWN -- The manager of a McDonald's attempting to make a deposit at National City Bank, 3939 Market St., at 6:20 a.m. Monday was robbed at gunpoint, said Lt. Robin Lees.
The woman told police a man wearing a ski mask approached, ordered her out of her car and then got in. The gunman drove about 30 feet before grabbing the four deposit bags from the car and then fleeing on foot, Lees said.
Cigarette sparked blaze
AUSTINTOWN -- A cigarette is believed to be the cause of a blaze that caused about $40,000 damage to a New Road house over the weekend.
Firefighters were called to the house at 4696 New Road about 7:20 p.m. Saturday. The fire started in the basement of the home and spread to the first and second floors, the fire department said.
No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. The two-story house is owned by Ralph Bailing, according to fire reports.
No agenda, no meetings
MINERAL RIDGE -- The Weathersfield Zoning Commission and board of zoning appeals have canceled their meetings for this week because of a lack of agendas.
The zoning commission was scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, and the board of zoning appeals at 7 p.m. Thursday.
17 reservistsreturn from Qatar
YOUNGSTOWN -- Seventeen 910th Airlift Wing reservists returned from the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar on Saturday.
The reservists were assigned to the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing at Al Udeid Air Base.
The primary mission of the 910th Airlift Wing is to deliver personnel and cargo by airdrop and air-land techniques anywhere in the world as directed.
As of June 3, there were about 170 Air Force Reservists from the 910th who were on active duty, with 46 of them deployed.
An incredible night
HOWLAND -- Howland Community Church, 198 Niles Cortland Road, is sponsoring its third annual outdoor movie night at 9 p.m. Friday. The movie to be shown will be "The Incredibles." Bring a blanket or lawn chair.
Howland safety session
HOWLAND -- The Special Operations Division of the Howland Fire Department will provide a public education program to residents about summer safety and public safety services. Programs will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at National City Bank on East Market Street and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 25 at Trumbull Business College on Ridge Road.
Programs will include bicycle inspections and helmet distribution; child seat safety inspections; child fingerprinting; firetruck, ambulance and police car tours; and smoke trailer and severe weather demonstrations.
