Council borrows $5.1M for projects

The mayor says residents will soon have an improved city.

HUBBARD -- City council voted Monday to borrow about $5.1 million for five projects, including the building of a new police station.
During its meeting, council approved legislation to borrow: $420,000 for rehabilitating the fire station; $1.75 million for constructing and repairing curbs and sidewalks and resurfacing streets; $375,000 to reconstruct the West Liberty Street sanitary sewer; $950,000 to renovate the service center facilities; and $1.6 million to pay for the construction, furnishing and equipping of a new police station.
The city is planning to borrow the money through the sale of bonds.
"I am glad that we've got this through. Now we just need to build everything and build it right," said Mayor Art Magee.
'It's going to look great'
"I am so thankful to the community for giving us the opportunity to do this. We are going to give the residents a beautiful, improved city. It's going to look great."
The mayor and council have been working for months to improve city facilities and streets.
"We are on our way," Magee said. "We really needed a new police station. We had so many problems with that facility and we need to improve some of the other buildings. We want to make this city look good."
The new safety center will be built on School Street, a block away from the current facility. The new department, includes a workout area for officers, locker rooms, large evidence rooms and a secured area to bring in prisoners.
Council is seeking bids for the plumbing, electrical, heating and general construction work of the new safety center.
