AKRON -- A Canfield youth was among the top finishers in the Rally Stock Division at the 68th All-American Soap Box Derby Saturday.
Jamie Berndt took second place in the race.
Nearly 500 young people participated in this year's Soap Box Derby.
Residents advised aboutseptic tank pumping
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County Board of Health is reminding Canfield and Boardman township residents to pump their septic systems.
Reminders will be mailed to more than 900 residents with a recommendation for pumping intervals and a list of licensed pumpers.
Septic tanks should be pumped at different intervals based on household size and water usage. The health board says a four-person household with a 1,000 gallon septic tank should have its septic tank pumped every three years.
Cancer Resource Centerinvites all to open house
EAST LIVERPOOL -- The American Cancer Society Resource Center in Hospice of the Valley, 15898 St. Clair Ave., will host an open house from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Information will be available about cancer, prevention and support groups. Those interested in volunteering for the ACS also are encouraged to visit.
Correctional facility to get electrical upgrade
MERCER, Pa. -- The State Regional Correctional Facility at Mercer is upgrading its electrical system. The $2,944,870 project has been awarded to The Chappy Corp. of Chelsea, Mass., and Franki Electric Inc. of Portersville, Pa.
The project is slated for completion by late October.
Restaurant, university host United Way benefit
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning Valley Restaurant and Youngstown State University students will host an event at the North Walnut Street restaurant at 6 p.m. Tuesday to raise money for the United Way of Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The event includes food, games, contests and an auction.
