Carlisle divulges plant closing, 300 layoffs

LAKE CITY, Pa. (AP) -- The largest employer in this northwestern Pennsylvania borough plans to close its plant and lay off more than 300 workers by the end of the year, officials said.
Carlisle Engineered Products, which makes plastic-injection molded parts for the automotive industry, notified employees last week that it will begin to lay off workers in September and will completely close the plant by Dec. 31, said Bill Wolfram, a representative from the United Steelworkers of America Local 3199-15, which represents the plant's union employees.
The shutdown will affect 266 hourly employees, 14 salaried employees and 23 temporary workers, Lake City Mayor Joseph Legnasky said.
At the beginning of the year, Carlisle Cos., the plant's publicly traded parent company, announced plans to get out of the automotive business, saying it wanted to concentrate on businesses in which it could develop a competitive advantage.
