YOUTH SOFTBALL Ohio Legends win three games to stay alive in Pony World Series
LIBERTY -- The Ohio Legends, which includes eight girls from Canfield, two from East Palestine and one from Hanoverton, have posted a 5-1-1 record in the Pony League World Series 16-and-under division.
Having captured their pool with a 2-0-1 record, the Legends won three times and lost once at Liberty Township Park Thursday.
Six of the Ohio Legends players from Canfield have in the past won three Little League state titles and were runners-up in two regional events.
The six athletes -- sisters Jill and Bryanne Halfhill, Christie Cole, Melissa West, Nikka Bonamase and Courtney Rothbauer -- have been playing together since they were 7 years old.
Also playing on the team from Canfield are Kelcie Herberger and Bianca Biondillo.
Ashley Clapper fired a three-hitter with nine strikeouts as the Legends posted a 2-0 victory over Rockland Thunder of New York in the first of four games Thursday.
The Legends then lost 1-0 to Pittsburgh Power before winning twice to stay alive in the tournament.
After the Pittsburgh loss, Clapper came on in relief and pitched three innings to pick up the win as the Legends, behind 3-0, rallied for five runs in the sixth inning to hand the Marion Rebels a 5-3 loss.
The Ohio Legends have allowed nine runs in seven games. West has won twice and Chelsea Peterson once.
The Legends were scheduled to play the Tri-State Thunder today at Packard Park at 9:30 a.m.
