LIBERTY -- Ohio Auditor Betty Montgomery, a 2006 gubernatorial candidate, will be the keynote speaker at the Trumbull County Republican annual summer picnic at 3 p.m. Saturday at Creed Pavilion in Liberty on Anderson Morris Road. Seat-belt enforcement
Extra police, part of a regional task force, will be on the roads enforcing impaired driving and seat-belt laws today in Youngstown, New Middletown, Austintown, Goshen, Jackson, Poland and Canfield.
School supply drive
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County Salvation Army will have a school supply drive during August. The theme for the drive, "Buy One Give One," encourages parents and guardians to buy one school supply for an underprivileged county pupil for each school supply purchased for their own children. School supply donations can be made at several locations: the entrances to Wal-Mart in Boardman, Kmart in Boardman and Kmart in Austintown and The Salvation Army at 1501 Glenwood Ave. Volunteers will distribute collected school supplies from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 9 at The Salvation Army. Parents must present a valid photo ID and proof of guardianship of school-age children in their home (medical card, insurance card, court papers, etc.) at the time of pickup. Neighborhood party
YOUNGSTOWN -- Jay Williams, an independent candidate for Youngstown mayor, is having the first in a series of free neighborhood parties from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Richard Brown Memorial United Methodist Church, 1205 Elm St. The event is open to the public and will feature food and entertainment.
MetroPark registration
YOUNGSTOWN -- Registration and a fee is due today at Mill Creek MetroParks Ford Nature Center for a program for children entering grades 3-5. On Aug. 9-10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., children will visit the MetroParks Farm in Canfield with a naturalist and an agricultural educator. On Aug. 9, children can explore the farm woodlot and learn the importance of forested areas to the early farmer. On Aug. 10, children will learn about modern farming techniques and follow the trail of a pizza from the field to the table, culminating in a snack. The fee is $30 for residents; $35 for nonresidents.
2 men due in court
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two men who police said showed up at Diver Steel City on Himrod Avenue with 40 aluminum wheels reported stolen from Cleveland Auto Wrecking in Liberty were arrested and due in municipal court today for arraignment on charges of receiving stolen property. Police said James B. Kennedy, 18, of East Marion Avenue, and Joselito J. Figueroa, 20, of South Federle Drive, Warren, showed up at Diver Steel with the wheels on Wednesday, the same day the owner of the wrecking company reported them stolen. Value of the wheels is listed as $600 on a police report.
South Side feud
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Detroit Avenue couple in their 80s got caught up in a feud between a neighbor of theirs and someone who lives on East Boston Avenue, police said. The elderly South Side couple called police after suspecting a prowler late Wednesday night and then discovering a broken kitchen window. Police said they've been called to a house in the 500 block of Detroit many times and describe the place as a hot spot for criminal activity.
4 felonies for snatchers
BOARDMAN -- Four people were arrested, accused of trying to snatch a woman's purse in the parking lot of the Southern Park Mall. Anthony Scott, 19, of South Duck Creek Road, North Jackson, was charged with attempted robbery. Jessica L. Hugley, 19, and two boys, ages 16 and 17, all of Atkinson Avenue, Youngstown, each were charged Wednesday with complicity to attempted robbery. The woman told police she was knocked down when the thieves tried to take her purse. They fled in a red Grand Am. A police officer saw the car on McKay Court at South Avenue and stopped the car in the rear of Jolly Joe's. The victim identified the four and they were arrested. All charges are felonies.
