YOUNGSTOWN -- A 29-year-old East Boston Avenue man treated for a gunshot wound to his left thigh Tuesday told police that he was shot when the headlights of a car approaching his on Gibson Street flashed and he stopped, thinking it was his cousin's car. The victim, who has only one eye because of a prior gunshot to the head, said he heard four or five shots and then realized he'd been hit, police said. He wasn't able to identify who shot him or how many were in the suspect's car.
Arraignment skipped;arrest warrant issued
YOUNGSTOWN -- It appears Tuesday's sweltering heat may have affected crime in the city. Only one woman was scheduled for arraignment Wednesday morning in municipal court on a traffic citation she received around 6 p.m. Tuesday. She didn't show up for arraignment so a warrant was issued for her arrest.
Leetonia issueswater converse notice
LEETONIA -- The village water department has issued a precautionary water converse notice to Leetonia water customers. Village officials said that because of the high demand for water and the hot weather conditions the village needs to service well pumps and give the wells more down time to recover. Leetonia water customers are being asked to voluntarily conserve water and help out with lowering the water demand, so the village doesn't have to issue a mandatory water conserve notice.
Caught with batteries
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 12-year-old Canfield Road boy duct-taped his boxer shorts to his legs so that 15 packages of batteries he stuffed down his underwear at Giant Eagle in Cornersburg wouldn't fall out, police said. A security guard at the store called police Tuesday afternoon after watching the boy try to shoplift the batteries, worth $69.44. The boy's mother was called to the scene and took him home. Police issued a theft citation.
Aggravated arson
MCDONALD -- A Second Street woman was arrested Wednesday on charges of aggravated arson, arson and felonious assault. Tanya Jornigan, 30, is accused of using gasoline from her garage to ignite a fire inside her home after an altercation with her husband early Tuesday and ramming his truck with her van. McDonald police and fire departments responded to the fire, which caused about $60,000 in damage to the property. Jornigan and her husband are in the process of getting a divorce.
Charged in stabbing
YOUNGSTOWN -- William R. Mayor, 28, of Akron, formerly of North Evanston Avenue, was charged Wednesday with attempted murder, aggravated burglary, retaliation and violating a protection order, Lt. Robin Lees said. Mayor is accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend at her North Evanston Avenue home on July 22. Bond was set at $1.5 million. Mayor was in court Wednesday for a preliminary hearing on a felonious assault charge from June 30. That charge was bound over to a Mahoning County grand jury. The new charges were added at the hearing, the clerk of court's office said.

BOARDMAN -- The school board meeting set for 5 p.m. today has been canceled.
3 accused in break-in
BOARDMAN -- Three teens were arrested Tuesday evening and charged with breaking into Paul C. Bunn Elementary School. Police responded to an alarm call at the school at about 5 p.m. and found a door open and the three boys, ages 15 and 16, walking quickly away. They stopped the three, two of whom live in the township and one of whom lives in Youngstown. The boys admitted going into the school to ride skateboards. Each of the boys was charged with breaking and entering.
DUI check this weekend
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Lawrence County DUI Enforcement Team will conduct a DUI checkpoint through Saturday in Neshannock Township. The objective of the checkpoint aims to deter drunken driving, reduce the number of DUI-related accidents and apprehend DUI violators.
