TRACK AND FIELD
Carly Youlton will be one of 75 Canadian track and field athletes to compete in the Pan American Junior Championships beginning Friday in Windsor, Ontario. Youlton, a sophomore and native of Chatham, Ontario, will compete in the long jump for the Canadian team, which will feature athletes and coaches from 10 of the country's 13 provinces and territories. In a release on the Championships' Web site, Canadian coach Dennis Fairall said, "I believe that Canada will field a very strong junior team. The meet will be one of the most competitive in the history of the Championships." The release also says the Championships are expecting the highest country turnout ever, with 44 out of a possible 45 nations competing. In her freshman year at Youngstown State University, Youlton was named the Field Performer of the Meet at the Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships by winning the long jump (18 feet, 41/4 inches) and the triple jump (36-53/4). She broke two school records at the outdoor conference meet, placing second in the triple jump (38-6) and third in the long jump (18-6). Previously at the national level, Youlton won the long jump and placed second in the triple jump at the Canadian Junior Track & amp; Field National Championship.
RECRUITING
Six state champions and nine student-athletes from the Valley highlight the track and field recruiting class. Four state champions, including South Range's Dan Nemergut, will join the men's squad, while 10-time All-Ohioan Jen Grayson from Maplewood and Kari Kreutzfeld of Port Clinton headline the women's class. Nemergut captured the individual crown at the 2004 Division III state cross country championships with a first-place time of 16 minutes, 13 seconds. He was also the runner-up at the state meet as a junior and placed second in the state in the 3200 meters as a senior. Jeff Dobbins of Wadsworth, Harold Jones of Wyoming and Chillicothe Unioto's Michael Perri were also state champions. Dobbins won the pole vault during the indoor season (15 feet) and was ranked 34th nationally. Jones, a Cincinnati native, won the 800 as a junior and finished runner-up as a senior. He was ranked 15th nationally as a senior in the indoor 800. Perri won the indoor state championship in the high jump (6-6) and ranked 38th nationally. Local standouts Aaron Merrill of Leetonia and South Range's Justin Carolyne also join the class. Merrill finished second in the state in the shot put and eighth in the discus as a senior after placing fifth in the shot and seventh in the discus as a junior. As a senior, he set the Tri-County League record in the shot put (60-3), a mark that ranked 23rd nationally. He was also the TCL champion in the shot put three straight years. Carolyne finished ninth in the state in the 300 hurdles as a senior and anchored South Range's eighth-place 4x400 relay at state. Corey Schreck (Wadsworth), state runner-up in the pole vault, and high jump All-Ohioan Martin Vieth (Oregon Clay) join Randy Clouse of Danville and Shayne York of Toledo St. Francis complete the class. Grayson, who signed with YSU in November, garnered All-Ohio honors in the 300 hurdles, 100 hurdles and high jump as a senior after winning the high jump as a junior. Her personal-best mark of 5-71/4 in the high jump as a junior ranked 57th nationally. Kreutzfeld also earned a state title in the indoor 200 and was on Port Clinton's 4x100 relay that placed second in the state and the fifth-place 4x200 relay with her twin and fellow recruit Shari Kreutzfeld. Joining Grayson from the area are Canfield's Stephanie Jarvis, Katie Betts of Lakeview, Newton Falls' Jacquline Clonch, Nicole Robenolt of Struthers and Christi Stahl from Badger. Jarvis will enter with a personal-best mark in the pole vault that is 2 feet higher than the YSU record. She finished seventh in the state as a junior and broke the meet record at the district with a first-place mark of 10-7. She earned All-Ohio honors in the 60, 200 and the long jump at the indoor state meet, and her personal-best time of 25.10 in the 200 is the fastest incoming time in the event in school history.
