Newcomer files petitions for trustee post

NEW SPRINGFIELD -- John Emrich, 63, has filed petitions for one of two four-year Springfield Township trustee positions that will be on the November ballot. It is Emrich's first run for political office.
The only other candidate to file is incumbent first-term Trustee Shirley Heck. Trustee Reed Metzka's seat will also be up in the election. The filing deadline for the nonpartisan post is Aug. 25.
A native of what is now Slovenia, Emrich came to Mahoning County when he was 7 years old and moved to Springfield Township 10 years ago.
He retired last year after 34 years working in the personnel department at General Motors in Lordstown.
