LAKE MILTON -- Ellsworth Road between state Route 534 and Duck Creek Road in Milton and Berlin townships will be closed through 4 p.m. Friday to allow the Mahoning County Engineer's office to replace four culverts. The traffic detour is Route 534, U.S. Route 224 and Duck Creek Road.
Food stolen from Arby's
AUSTINTOWN -- A Mahoning Avenue restaurant reported more than $1,000 in food taken from a freezer over the weekend. An employee of Arby's told police that four cases of roast beef, five cases each of chicken and chicken fingers and one case each of curly fries, apple turnovers and cherry turnovers were taken Sunday from a freezer on the north side of the business. Police noted that there was no forced entry to the freezer.
Cigarettes stolen
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two businesses were broken into early Monday and cigarettes stolen from each, police said. Someone used a large rock to throw through the front window at Check-N-Go on Wilson Avenue around 3:45 a.m., police said. At 4 a.m. Monday, the owner of the Petra Food Mart on South Avenue discovered the rear drive-through window broken and numerous items missing, including 12 watches, 20 cases of cigars, 12 cartons of cigarettes and $350 in coins, reports show.
Faculty Legacy Society
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University is launching the Faculty Legacy Society to recognize faculty members who donate $25,000 or more to the university. Funds contributed by society members will be used to support a variety of activities such as professional lectures, faculty release time, scholarships and student travel to professional meetings. "Because the faculty is the best source of information regarding the needs of students, donors have complete flexibility in designing the gifts and designating their use," said Stephen Hanzely, a member of the society's steering committee and professor emeritus of physics and astronomy.
2 arrested in theft
WARREN -- Police arrested two men in connection with stealing 122 cans of soda pop from Kmart, 2485 Parkman Road N.W. Customers reported someone had forced open the Pepsi vending machine in front of the store and was taking cans to a vehicle. The men were arrested, pending charges of vandalism, theft and disorderly conduct.
Dog helps nab man
WARREN -- Police had to call out the canine unit while arresting a 22-year-old man accused of taking his mother's purse. The man was arguing with his mother over a cell phone she had canceled when he grabbed her purse, breaking the straps. The man fled and was discovered hiding in bushes on Youngstown Road, police said. He refused officers' orders, and police released their dog and used pepper spray. The man was treated at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital for a dog bite and the pepper spray; he is being held in Trumbull County Jail with charges pending.
Checks stolen, cashed
WARREN -- An 18-year-old woman reported someone had taken 18 personal checks from her residence while she was out of town. The Farmers National Bank checks were cashed at different locations between July 18 and July 22 for about $1,050.
