NEW YORK-PENN LEAGUE Scrappers four-game win streak comes to an end in Aberdeen, 6-2



Mahoning Valley returns home tonight to meet the red-hot Crosscutters.
ABERDEEN, Md. -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers saw their four-game winning streak come to an end here Sunday by dropping a 6-2 contest to the Aberdeen Ironbirds at Ripken Stadium.
Even with the loss, the Scrappers (18-15) hold onto first place in the Pinckney Division of the New York-Penn League.
The Scrappers got into trouble early as the Ironbirds plated three runs in the first inning and build a 5-0 lead.
Peterson homers
Derrick Peterson hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to get Mahoning Valley on the scoreboard.
The Scrappers narrowed the gap to 5-2 in the eighth as Peterson again swung the big bat, driving in Jose Constanza with a single up the middle.
The Ironbirds came right back to score their final run on a home run by Kennedy Catholic graduate Nolan Reimold in the bottom of the inning.
Joe Ness started and lasted only an inning, but the three runs he allowed cost him the defeat. One of the two hits he allowed was off his foot and forced him out of the game at the end of the inning.
Justin Pekarek came on and pitched six innings of relief, while Nelson Hiraldo pitched the eighth, allowing Reimold's homer.
Cirilo Cumberbatch had three hits and Peterson a pair as the Scrappers outhit the Ironbirds 9-7.
Saturday night
Saturday night, the Scrappers held off a final rally by Aberdeen to win their fourth straight contest 8-6.
The Scrappers took a 6-0 lead into the fifth inning, but had to battled the Ironbirds who had the winning run at the plate in the ninth inning before Mahoning Valley turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
Jose Chavez paced the Scrappers with three hits while Mike Woodson and Jose Constanza each added two hits. Evandy DeLeon drove in three runs as the Scrappers finished with 12 hits, all singles.
Mahoning Valley returns home tonight to play the red-hot Wilmington Crosscutters in a 7:05 contest at Eastwood Field. The Crosscutters possess a 12-game winning streak.
