St. Rose Festival
GIRARD -- The St. Rose Festival, which runs Thursday through next Sunday, will sponsor a special "Kick off for Kids" from 7-11 p.m. Thursday at the school gym.
Games, food and music will be featured. The cost is $3 per child for children up to 16. The entrance fee pays for games. Food is sold separately.
The festival also includes a lunch menu to be served at noon Friday and Saturday. Orders can be faxed to (330) 545-0119 by 3 p.m. Thursday for a quick pickup.
The menu includes cheese puffs, cavatelli and meatballs, fried dough, steak hoagie with a choice of toppings, pizzas and hot sausage.
Environmental award
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County Family and Children First Council received a Children's Environmental Health Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The award recognizes dedication and leadership in protecting children from environmental health risks, specifically the council's advocacy campaign to eliminate child lead poisoning from Mahoning County.
The council presented information to local officials, requesting stricter enforcement against rental properties with lead hazards. The council is a coalition of more than 55 public and private agencies.
Special-needs camp
KINSMAN -- Girl Scouts of Lake to River Council will offer a camp for special-needs individuals Aug. 1-5 at Camp Sugarbush, 6515 state Route 88.
Campers will swim, cook over campfires, canoe, try their skills at the archery range and play basketball. For more information, contact Karen Conklin at (330) 652-5877.
Bench remembrance
GIRARD -- The city is taking orders for "Forever Benches," handmade wooden benches to be permanently placed in different locations downtown.
Each 5-foot bench can be engraved with the name of a family, loved one, business, high school class or organization.
The parents of Kenneth Lee Barr Jr., who was killed in a 1999 automobile accident, are preserving their son's memory by constructing the benches, which cost $200 each, including a message of up to 30 letters.

Road detour noted
WARREN -- Trumbull County Engineer's Office will close Fisher-Corinth Road, about 660 feet east of Stoddard Hayes Road, in Johnstown Township from Aug. 1-3 for culvert replacement. The recommended detour is east/southeast on Fisher-Corinth Road, north on Corinth Court Road, west on Davis Peck Road and south on Stoddard-Hayes Road.
The engineer's office will close Ridge Road, about 400 feet south of Cadwallader Sonk Road, in Fowler Township from Aug. 3-5 for culvert replacement. The recommended detour is south/southeast on Ridge Road, east on King Graves Road, north on state Route 193 and west on Cadwallader Sonk Road.
